It was a 7 hour long class with an hour in the range. After the range, the instructor used my target to show how they should have looked One of the classmates stated.. That's not fair! He was just shooting at a hole 50 shots. 24 at 3 yards, 12 at 10 and 14 at 15 yards. All of them center mass. I used my S&W .38 Model 10. I was pretty pleased with myself!

Gotta take my certificate to the DMV Monday.
In my state the class was a train wreck. It was listed as not a class for beginners. Many of the people had never fired a gun. The shots didn't even have to hit the target. If you had a jam everyone had to wait for the instructor to clear your gun. Ours had to be at 3 and 5 yards I believe. My motorcycle class was twice as long. I pissed the instructor off noting that to when getting my bike. I think any class is unconstitutional, but that is another conversation.
Yea 5 of the folks in this class had never fired a gun.... Kinda of a scary thought actually.. One girl turn around at the range, gun loaded and cocked, pointing it att he instructor to ask a question.
She failed. Personally, I am glad they require a class. Some of those folks scare me.

In Missouri its a CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) and we take it directly to the Sheriff's Department as well. After background check, finger printing, etc (I even got the option to do a retinal scan), go to the DMV to get it put on your driver's license.

In Indiana, it's just a handgun permit (we allow both concealed and open carry). We go to the sheriffs dept for the paperwork/fingerprinting then the state sends us the permit. It has nothing to do with our drivers licenses. No reason why it should be. Just because someone doesn't have a license (I do) doesn't mean he shouldn't have a gun permit. My drivers license is only good for something like 6 years (could be 4...I can't remember) but my gun permit is for life.

Some states take official shooting records in lieu of the dumb classes. Thats why I have a Fl CCP. I got better things to do with 2 days of my time when I shot marksman in the military.
When the instructor took your target and said, " this is how this should look, " you did have the decency to look at the ground and say," aw, shucks, just my lucky day, " in a self-effacing tone?

For those that were clueless, it was better than sending them out as perhaps more of a danger to themselves than a criminal.
For a CCW, Georgia doesn't require a class. Just a background check and fingerprinting. Done at the Sheriff's office/courthouse.
Same as up here in Indiana. Tho we have a 3rd party that does the prints/background check depending on your county now. The state doesn't actually do it themselves now.
Last time i renewed my permit they didn't have the 3rd party. We have a life time option now too, which i took this time it had to be renewed.

That makes sense. In NC we carry a separate card for our permit; however, it does get tied to our driver's license somehow because if you don't present your CCH permit, they'll still find out when they run your license. (and you'll be in trouble if you're armed and didn't inform the LEO) I keep my CCH with my DL so if I'm stopped I can easily hand the LEO both at the same time.

Absolutely. I found my CCH class enjoyable and very informative. It covered not only the legalities of carrying concealed, but the use of deadly force and when it's allowed as well. I think it would be a beneficial class for anyone who owns firearms, whether they intend to carry or not.

Roger, when you were in the military how often did you have to qualify on your firearm? How long ago were you in the military?

While not totally constitutional, I'm ok with a basic safety/function class, but with no 'test' afterward as the biggest concern i have about mandatory classes is that they could be used to in effect prohibit people from getting a permit by setting the bar so high the average Joe could never achieve it.

I agree with your concerns, but the range qualification I had to do was so easy that if you couldn't pass it, you *really* have no business with a firearm. The only constitutional concern is making it mandatory. I think more training should be encouraged independent of legal requirements.

Oh, not saying that they were using it that way today, just that it could be used that way in the future as another avenue to remove our rights without actually risking doing it 'officially'. ( much as we are seeing it being done in DC after they were told to stop 'abridging', they have made the rules so hard to follow that it has the same effect )

I enlisted in 1965. I qualified once...in basic training. My DD214 sufficed for Fl permit. Thats because all military must qualify with a rifle so proving you were in is all thats needed. Anyone can apply for a Fl licence regardless of residency. Most states have a reprocicity agreement with Fl. I had to also mail them a completed fingerprint card furnished by a recognized police dept, and $120. I think its good for 6 years. They send you a renewal notice you only need to sign and send a check with for a new one. I have no problem since being a pilot, I had an FBI top secret clearance in the AF which is also in my records.

I think its utah that is similar, and a lot of people around here get them so they can carry in OH too. ( and most of the country ). I haven't bothered since i stopped traveling.
Funny how some states are.. I got my CCW just going down to my local court house filling out some paperwork and i got it a few weeks later... Pretty cool that your state gives you the option of open carry or consealed... My state You can open carry without a permit But With the power trip mose police officers are on around here I wont risk it. So i got my CCW.
Congrats though.. It's a diffrent feeling being able to carry a gun on you.. Its a nice protected feeling...

I was under the impression that NJ is not a carry friendley state anymore...

Here i worry less about the police as i do the paranoid citizenry, manipulated by the media. Most of the police i know are good people. ( and yes, i do work with several on a regular basis due to my job )

That really worry's me as well... There was a story of a man a few months ago in philly who had the police called on his because he had a gun on his person in a delli a it was consealed but the waitress could see the grip of the gun and the manager called the police.. they show up he shows them his CCW and for some odd reason the cop went and beat and arrested the guy... Philly Is real funny about guns.. they were trying to push for there own gun laws that would over ruel state laws because of the murder rate in the city... Thankfully it was brought down to where you have to go to a class if you want to get your CCW in philly.. What urks my chain about philly is that they have a program going now to get illegal guns off the street Where if a citizen reports someone having a suspicious gun and it leads to an arrest that citizen gets a $5000+ reward.. problem is there calling about every one with a gun.. I could see them calling about some gangstetr looking guy on there street selling drugs with an unconsealed hand gun packed down around his junk with the handel showing out and a shitty aditude.. but its another to call it on an ordenary looking guy not causing any trouble eating lunch with his son...
5K in a bad economy.. almost no work involved to get it... almost like they set it up to do that...
Thats exactley what its for.. As i said though philadelphia really does over step its boundry's when it comes to citizen gun ownership.. I bring my gun with me whenever I go to philadelphia.. even walked right past a cop with it on me under my shirt.. You shouldent have to feel scared about being around a cop with a gun on your person but in philadelphia I do..

Wow. Sounds like good shooting. Kudos to you for becoming a person who claims their rights as an American.
Forgive my coming rant, though, as I'm in a bit of a mood this morning. Again, where are the ACLU type lawyers? While I'm actually in favor of people voluntarily getting training, I have a major problem with government mandated training of an inalienable RIGHT.
Does your state have a mandatory class before you can speak in public? Is there a mandatory class to attend church? Is there mandatory training to ensure that you only associate with the 'right kind' of people? Why is the 2nd Amendment (and various State Constitutions) treated so dramatically different? (I'd posit that many more have been affected by 'free speech' than with guns).
As for the required class, I am of two minds. I firmly believe I should be allowed to carry without a permit... But I also (obviously) know how to handle a gun. Some of the folks in my class scare the hell out of me. One lady kept pointing her unloaded 357 revolver at my head during class. She was trying to get the hang of using her sights.. Yes it was unloaded but you NEVER point a gun at something you do not intend to shoot. I eventually smacked the gun out of her hand and I formed her of some basic handgun safety... Primarily, if she pointed it at me again I would take it and pistol whip her with it.
Carrying a gun is not the same as public speaking. You can't blow someone's head off by speaking. So I have mixed emotions about the mandatory class. I learned a lot in it and others learned even more. So I am kind of glad we have it. Otherwise she might be pointing a loaded gun at someone in the future. She is also the one who failed because she pointed a loaded firearm at the instructor.

I think the instructor dropped the ball by not correcting her (or tossing her out of the class) when she was pointing the gun at you instead of waiting until she was pointing a loaded gun at people.

think the dmv is so when a cop runs your plate he already knows your carrying, and thats not a bad thing.. funny story,, when young and stupid.. I had an s-10, and worked in the back bay boston/dorchester overnight so I put my radio in the glove box, got pulled over one night.. for the lic plate light of all things, and was asked for lic and reg.. well stupid me goes to get the reg. that I kept in a plastic sleave under the bench seat.. I came up to a gun at the side of my head.. I was like WTF..
My handgun already saved my life three weeks ago, so I figured time for me carry legally. I had a man trying Rob me at knifepoint when I was nice enough to give him a ride across town. Needless to say he had to step out of the vehicle at 45 miles an hour.

I didn't hear about this one. Care to share details?
You shouldn't be talking about this online, you are clearly in the right, but with the way things are today, it isn't going to end well. I suggest removing any comments about this.
