I'm looking for a skilled wood guy that likes boats.

I have gotten into another project and am in need of a fellow who would like to live on a 65 foot yacht and do a bunch of reconstruction and fine finish work on the lower deck.

She is a great boat that was unfinished and she went for a song and a dance. When it is finished it will be in the million dollar range so I need some really nice work done.
Upper deck is complete and livable with full kitchen, living room and only bunk room quarters. The private living area is open steel hull, steel floor steel beam ceiling. I need master bed and bath plus two guest rooms and bath done.

If you want a vacation, live on a yacht and some money this may be for you. Maybe some retired guy here.

Also I am building an entire new fly bridge over the second deck and could use a good metal guy. Not as much work and I could do that myself but I really have no time to get into every aspect of this because there is only one of me and to much to do. General labor is already here so deck hand are not needed.

Though I am branded a devil in priests clothing I cast not the raiment I wear for I am not beholden to any flock with which any color has been given to me.

Sorry Pokey I don’t fly anymore. I could do the metal work. Beside between my doctors appointments and all I wouldn’t be able to help you.

I do have a buddy who is an excellent carpenter and licensed electrician. But he’s off on a short job in New Hampshire right now.

Besides he is married with twin girls at home and doesn’t like long jobs away from home anymore.

Although knowing his wife and kids for the life of me I can’t understand why.

There are drugs for the flying and we got doctors out here ya know. Bring your wife the is plenty of room it is a huge place.
With your metal experience I would get the gangway, davits, flybridge and widen the upper deck in one shot.

Maybe his buddy married twin girls.
You could always birth that boat in Galveston. Or Corpus. It can even sell here.
Back just a few years ago, I had an opportunity to crew a boat from Alaska to Galveston and go thru the Panama Canal. I don't think I could pass up a second one.
I know a buddy. A Master Carpenter. Built rich Houston Texan homes. Has a portfolio. Even has a Pilot's license. Not sure about a Captain's license.
Hmmm.

Ties bind man. Let freedom prevail. We only work a few days a week leaving 2 to 4 days for waverunners, swimming, fishing, skiing,General partylife, great on the water restaurants and bars with live music, massive wildlife, shooting old propane tanks out in the water with high powered rifles, occasional seal and the most beautiful quiet sippin time evenings you could imagine.

That costs money. I only saw free room and board as compensation.
When I work out of town I want to work at least twelve hours a day. I want to get back home and I can get enough of those benefits even working twelve hours a day.

LOL

Thanks for the offer Pokey but I would really have to drive to bring everything I would need for tools. Not really a problem with the Burb.

The real problem is the wifeys farm and animals, she would go in a heartbeat. But with all the animals that would be a no, no. well unless of course she could bring them.

Thanks for the offer though, I will ask my buddy when he gets back from New Hampshire later this week.

Sounds like a great deal for who ever you get to do it, I hope you can find someone here on the forum to do it.

Just out of curiosity where is the boat berthed?

Oh no there is pay. I would want to to it piecemeal. Bid per job/section. Work all freaking day and night if that makes you happy but I am looking for someone that won't charge so much in lieu of vacation time.
Come bid the whole damn thing out if you want is also fine. It all comes down to math.

I have land so bring your critters if you can haul em.

the yacht is now birthed in shallow water(8-15) at the Island I sold last year. I have it tied to a 300' barge with steel deck for working purposes.
I have or can buy any tools needed. I like tools.

LOL don’t even say things like that, you have no idea how many animals she has here. It would take an 18 wheeler and a 4 horse stock trailer. She just said there are like 70 assorted critters here, believe me rather than count them I will take her word for it.

Besides it’s 3,300 miles one way, I couldn’t afford the gas at today’s prices.

I have to ask is that a cannery next door to the island? Seems to me I remember something that looked like a cannery in the pictures you posted when you were selling it.
Or was it something else?

Also I have to ask, this isn’t that mine sweeper that was docked on the island is it?

The cannery is actually a covered marina with facilities. The Minesweeber is no longer a financial interest to me. I sold it. I am contracted out for security on it but for nowe that is all. It would be a multimillion dollar affair way above my means.

I'm just doing a little 65x20 5/8" hull steel yacht. About 2400 SQ' interior living space on two decks. Much more useful than a 173' wartime beast.

Sorry about leaving so abruptly Pokey, Hey WTF is your name? I feel funny calling you Pokey.

I was falling asleep at the keyboard. Wifey sent me in for my afternoon nap.

I did get in touch with my buddy, got him on his cell phone. He is unable, more unwilling to be gone for the amount of time a project like that would take. Sounded like at least a month long if not longer project to him.

To be honest after we talked about it, and we did discuss it in depth. It sounds like a very in depth project that could take even a 2 man crew a month. A lot of scribe work because it is a steel hull to wood job.

Something he had thought of that I didn’t even think of is that if it is just a shell inside, you are going to need a welder inside as well to weld in tabs for the carpenter to attach the wood studs to.

I don’t know, you didn’t mention if there were any attachment points in place already. Something you may want to consider before getting anyone in there.

Anything I have ever done inside was steelwork on the oil rig I worked on.

I think you may be looking at hirering more than just a good carpenter for the interior work if there is not anything inside but a shell. Something to think about and look for if you haven’t already.

I myself after talking to Melanie about flying, realized that I couldn’t fly if I wanted to. Remember I had a stroke. I and she doesn’t think my doctor would even OK me to fly, not sure I have never asked him about flying. Was never something that came up, because I hate flying to begin with. Long story I won’t get into here.

I really think you may need to look at that marina next door and ask for some of their help in finding someone that is retired, and familiar with this type of work.

Not saying that a good retired master carpenter couldn’t do the work, but like I said before there may be a lot more to the interior work than just carpentry. I can’t be sure as I have never worked inside something like this.

Now the steel work is something I could do, but as I said don’t think I could get the OK from the Doc or from Melanie, fencing season is coming up shortly here.

Beside I don’t think you really want to buy the kind of tools I would need. A trailblazer welder goes for around 5 K and a good plasma cutter like I have is around 2K. Then there are so many other simple tools like multiple types and sizes of C clamps, vise grips, and so many other things.

You really need to find someone a lot closer than me to do your welding also.

Sorry I couldn’t have better news for you. If there is anything I can do via email, phone or any other way please feel free to give me a holler. I have nationwide free calling and can give you more info and help that way if you like.

As I said my best recommendation is to see if there are tabs welded inside the interior before hirering someone here or anywhere unless they can also weld.

Again I am sorry if I got your hopes up.

Steve

This big fellow flew into the upper main cabin yesterday and got all wrapped up in wire and twine. He is about 14 inches standing high and has 1 1/2" claws that are very very sharp and strong.
He could get your whole damn finger in his mouth. It took a bit to get him untangled with out him killing me or ripping my skin off but with a little help from the cutting dikes I finally managed.
This picture is of him just after he was freed. He just stood there calmly staring at me for several minutes. It was surreal the way he just stared at me after just a few minutes ago he was cursin and hissin and basically wanting to kill me while he was tangled. After a few more minutes he hoped onto the rail to get a look around and he left his back to me never once turning as if he had no need for me any longer he flew off and land on a tree across the water. I left after that.

I have known this guy for over five years and this is are first actual encounter. Other than watching him I hope it is our last. He may be only 14 inches tall but he has some spirit.

That does it for me. I draw the line at owls. Evil they are. Boat's probably haunted, with all manner of bad spirits, Taatis, spooks, giant bilgerats, and other dangerous paranormal manifestations. Was it's original name The Pequod?

I sent you one though.

I just got back from the boat. Getting ready to run both the diesels maybe this weekend.

Hey I am still looking.

Is there anyone that has minor skills and the ability to learn and/or at least do what is shown.

I'm looking for a live aboard that will work four days a week on the boat.

1000 bucks a month. Paid water/PGE/Housing. I have two 08 yamaha waverunners and a ski boat to play around on there.
Upstairs has full kitchen biggger than most homes and furnished living room. Bedroom is just a small bunk room but it is just for sleeping.

Things we will be doing

Sanding to repaint
painting with sprayers
Welding with mig welders
Carpentry work
running electronics for engine room
building some new docks

You don't need to know how to do any of these things but you do need to be mechanically inclined. I can teach anyone with anything as long as they have some interest in building things.

Not interested in anyone that can't handle their booze or does any illegal drugs. If you smoke just don't do it on the boat or around me.

Man if I was single, I would be all over this. I can do all that, plus in-frame your engines. $1000 doesn't go very far, though, especially in California and the boss would never let me go. If only I was about 24 years old again and single............sigh

Hey sorry I have been away on important family business.
I got your PMs but have not had time to digest it and get back to you but I'm on it now.

Bring her. If you can do other stuff you would have more options on the money.

He is doing fine. I see him regularly scouting about and swooping after dark.
