There is an episode of ST TNG where the Enterprise encounters a probe from a dead planet. Picard's head is downloaded with the memory/story of the extinct people of that planet. He learns to play a sort of flute in this episode. The people of that planet left the flute in the probe for him.
In a later episode he plays the flute again and explains the melody as a piece of folk music to a woman who plays Piano with him in a jefries tube.
Does anyone know if this piece of music was written just for ST TNG? It always sounded familiar somehow.
Does anyone know of a full lenth version of the piece? The longest segment I've been able to assemble is about 1 minute 10 sec.

You should be able to find it on Kazaa. I have a copy. I'm pretty sure it's original. Damned emotional piece, too, when you think back to the episode. Powerful stuff.

This piece is based on an old Irish or Scottish folk melody. The flute is a Clarke Tin Whistle dressed up with some frilly hanging thing. The first episode was called "Inner Light". If you buy the Star Trek 25th anniversary CD it will have the full orchestral suite from that episode, as well as the suite from the DS9 episode "The Visitor", another great piece. Jay Chattaway wrote the score for "Inner Light". Sheet music by Hal Leonard Corporation. Picard can be seen playing this whistle again in the episode "Lessons" as well as "Fist Full of Datas".
Can you tell that "Inner Light" is my all-time favorite episode of ST:TGN?

I have every Star Trek TNG on VHS tape, that I begin taping back when it first started till the end. Many years of process when into it, but its a time capsul indeed. I would watch them every once in awhile, but since it comes on TNN now, I watch it on that channel, because I don't want to wear down the tapes. The cool thing about the tapes is it comes with commercials. Seeing old commercials rocks!
I've been a Star Trek fan well before the Fiero even came out! So I'm something of an expert on ST stuff (trust me).
Regarding music, I've always thought that the original series' music was by far the best. The music in TNG (and the other sequel series) faded into the background and were rarely noticeable. By contrast, the music from the origial series was like another character. Who can forget the music from "Amok Time" or "The Doomsday Machine"? Great stuff! Available on CD.

I have all the TNG tapes from Paramount. No commercials, some have not been opened. Got them from one of the video clubs. Would be willing to sell to a fellow treker at the right price ....Paul

When the show first came out, I was taping the new episodes off of satellite. They were the feeds to the stations that aired the program, had only half the commercials, and had an audio check at the beginning with Michael Dorn saying "This is the left channel...this is the right channel...center...and surround", which came out of the appropriate speakers. Kinda cool stuff.
FYI, Long ass wait on any of the top end Tin Whistles.
I was going to get a nice one from Copeland himself (Or whoever makes them) but 9 months is a bit to long for me to wait) Price was a bit up there too.

I figured I'd try the MP3 linked above.... bad news... It crashes media player 7. Never saw an MP3 do that before.
Before someone says winamp etc.... I'm tryin not to load the machine with 9000 things. I'm in the middle of an important beta test. I need to know exactly what is running/installed if something frys.
Interesting about the whistles... I thought it looked funny for a flute.
I'll toss it into Cooledit2000, and then save it as an mp3. It might make it a little friendlier for your player. (Winamp does this too if anyone else wants to try)
I won't be around till Monday tho...

The file worked on mine with Windows Media 9. Awesome compliation, thanks for the hosting and recommendation.
And someone mentioned that DS9 was something to be ignored? Voyager I'll agree with(whenever they couldn't get a script, they just had someone/thing take over the doctor) but DS9 was really good. It was a little too depressing but the lighter episodes didn't seem to suit them.
Anyone watching Enterprise? I try to catch them when I can but I always had homework to do when the episodes are on. Its a good show, with excellent production, but it doesn't fit with whats been established in other series.

He paid $1,250 for one. wow. I would never have thought there was that much of a market out there.
Tho to be honest if there was one piece of music I could learn to play it would problably be the inner light piece... Music and me just don't seem to get along well.
