I hear there a hit or miss. I've never used one but i was looking into getting one for my old 87. no use putting it on my 88 because its got packs... makes life much easier with fieros
ok thanks guys. on the newer V6s (3.1, 3100, 3400, ect) using the MSD coils has been problematic. so I wasnt sure how the 2.8 liked it.. being completely different setup figured I'd ask
I'm going to give it a try. the MSD coil is actually less than the delco one lol

Hope you haven't ordered yet. I put one on my 2.8 with new wires plugs dizzy etc and the thing konked out in like 10 miles. Paid to send it back only for them to ship it right back saying it wasn't "economically feasible" to repair or replace. Would not buy anything from MSD again.
Can't say how it will run over time, but just put one on our 2.8L. Found it at O'Rielly's for $36, was the best price around, stock #8226.
Had it out for a ride yesterday and it ran well. It's all connected to FS plug wires, Standard brand cap and rotor, AC plugs(stock), AC module, AC pickup coil.

I have one on my car (part number 8226) and it works... revs clean to 5000+ RPM.
[Edit:]
I listed the part number for the regular MSD coil and not the Street Fire because I actually went far out of my own way to get that specific part - there's a reason: the Street Fire coil is made in China. I couldn't tell you if the standard coil is 100% made in the US or not but I'd rather use that than one that I know is made halfway across the world (in a place where quality control has never been the biggest priority).

Two things to remember when buying hi-performance parts:
Make sure the "Application Statement" says "street" and not "Drag Race" if you putting it in a street car. Main reason is that the "Drag Race" part was developed for "short runs", using it in a street application could lead to excessive temperatures of the component or systems in line with it.
Secondly, High Performance "Race" parts are not intended to have the "Long Term Durability" that is required on "Street Applications".
I just had a recent example on one of MSD's top of the line Performance Distributors on my SBC, it will suck air-borne moisture in - but doesn't breath well enough to get rid of it on warm up. Resulted in frying the cap and rotor on first 20 mile drive after winter storage. Never had this happen with GM high performance distributors - ever. Race car owners have their cars apart so often, this doesn't turn into an issue for them.
The standard MSD coil is a plug and play street/strip coil. Nothing really special about it as it work like any other coil. They are also covered by a warranty as most MSD parts for up to one year.
We sell thousands of them where I work and see very few back. Like anything electronic you will get a bad one now and them. We get many other brands back too including Delco. It is hard to get a coil made here and even then that does not mean it is a good one or a bad one. Just don't buy more coil than you need. The OE replacment one is all you need for a stock system. Bigger and more expensive is not always better if you don't need it.
So if you want to use the stock plug in GM coil replacment there should be no worries.
