I find the trunk (behind the engine) almost useless. Does anyone have ideas on what that area could be used for? I am not interested in cutting it out. Just if there ia a mod that makes it something useful.

It will hold two sets of golf club bags or tool box, duffle bag for packing cloths. It will hold several bags of groceries, not good for frozen products. Good for anything that fits into the space provided.

On the 88's, if you raise the rear crossmember and move the muffler flat, it will give you a bunch of additional space that the trunk can be enlarged into.

Small car = small trunk. Look at some years of Corvettes! You can carry two or three overnight bags, a laptop ,a tool box, a fire extinguisher and a few other necessary items. Behind the seats are coat hooks that can be used to hang an extra days dress if necessary and a tiny bit of space for a laptop. If you go on long trips, the best idea is to keep it to one or two overnights or bring lots of wash and wear clothes. . If its an everyday car, you can fit quite a few grocery bags in the trunk but if you have perishable items, its gets pretty hot in there. Those need to go in the passenger compartment. You can also utilze the underhood space to a degree, but the key there is to use soft luggage like duffel bags. The Fiero trunk is suffficent for trips of short duration but its not a family sedan. For my overnight ventures to shows with the wifey, it works out pretty nice.

Lol i love tha fact theres a trunk where its suposed to be on a fiero. You try putting things into a miata trunk than you can complain about trunk space. IMO you should be happy with what you have as a trunk. No fighting words intended. Beleave it or not its still bigger than a firebird trunk.

I have a '97 Eclipse Spyder. My Fiero nearly has double the trunk space that the Spyder does (2g DSMs have VERY little space in the back seats if you've didn't know). Even with the spare up front I can still haul more groceries in the Fiero's trunks. Cold stuff goes up front, rest in the back, and I still usually have about half the top open for anything else. It's all about how you pack stuff in there.
What you talking about? I've gone camping and had tent, BBQ, cooler and bags in there. If you need more room, you can also take out the spare up front for more storage space.
Most 2 seaters have even less "trunk". Pontiac Solstice gotta be the worst - has NO spare and still NO trunk space (gas tank is there). Basically, it's just storage space for the roof.
That's probably the most important use. It's the only place inside the Fiero aside from the front passenger seat that the full-sized flat tire will fit.

Right! And unless you have a towel in with the spare, you don't want that flat tire sitting on your nice seats! Or risk it rolling up and cracking the dash, or anything else.

How big of a trunk do you want in a 2 seat sports car? It's not like you're going to be hauling lumber in it, are you? (and if you are, talk to JazzMan about his luggage rack)
I can put a 3 draw tool box, floor jack, jack stands, plus enough clothes for a week's vacation in my trunk. Other than bulky items that won't fit, I've rarely had a need for more storage space.
Heck, my 2000 Trans Am trunk is about the same size as the Fiero. Only advantage it has is fold down rear seats for some extra space.
I can fit my detailing kit and two folding chairs in there with no problem. I think I once managed to cram 9 or 10 12-Packs of Coke in my trunk, that was the most I've ever filled it.
Wow! What a response. I guess I had thought I would get responses where people had made modifications to make it more usable . Seems many of you use it as a trunk. In my case, like a couple posting here I use it to stand in while working on the engine.

I relocated the battery there. I suppose now that a few have pointed out the importance of the space to be used to carry a flat full sized tire, I have screwed myself. On the other hand, I chose not to relocate it to the front as I would like to have a spare in the event of a flat tire - Catch 22 here. I'm screwed either way! I guess I'll have to fix the rusted out hole where the battery is supposed to go and fab a new battery tray! What the heck, I am always looking for another Fiero project (like I don't have enough to do owning 2)!

I bought my first Fiero new in 1986 when I was in college. Here's what you can do with the trunk....from a college kid's perspective;
Strip the bed of it's sheets. Lay the sheets on the floor. Pile your dirty laundry into the middle of them. Roll them into a large joint looking bundle. Stuff them into the trunk of the Fiero, leaving just enough room for an overnight bag. Drive for 2 hours. Show up at Mom's doorstep with your laundry and a sad look on your face
If you pack it correctly, you can get an amazing amount of stuff in there.
put a drain plug in it, then line with truck bed liner (rhino liner, lizard skin, etc) fill it with ice and your favorite beverage..... the rhino liner, lizard skin, etc, will actually insulate it from the engine heat....
