Remove the shift knob.
Remove the ashtrays, remove the screws and take off the shift plate.
Remove the cig lighter plate screws and remove plate.
Remove the screws from the cig lighter and make sure it will go back through the glove box console.
Remove the 2 screws on the front of the glove box console and 2 screws inside the glove box.
Remove the glove box console.

Remove the shifter console by removing the shift knob, pulling out ashtrays and removing 4 7mm screws under the ashtrays and lift the console off. Then remove 2 7mm screws on the front of the arm rest console, open the "glove box" and remove 2 more screws behind the glovebox compatment. 2 torx skrews on cig lighter cover, Lift out the console unplug wires from lighter.

If you've got a manual, the shift knob just unscrews. For an automatic there's a clip at the front of the shift handle that you can remove out with a small jewlers screw driver, then the handle just pops off.

True. And for everything else he should get a Service Manual to make things easier. https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/078255.html
