I was just wondering how do you get access to the oil sending unit on an 86 4cyl?

And how can I tighten or remove it because I think its gone BAD? I want to try and do it myself but if its a big job I will leave it to the professionals.
Thanks

The oil pressure sending unit on the Duke is screwed in to a port in the side of the block, underneath the intake manifold.

Unplug the wiring connector, put a wrench on the hex flange behind the sending unit's body, and ....

Is it easier to access it from the top or under the car?

It's easier to see what you're doing from below. Whether or not it's easier to r&r the sending unit from below than from above, varies as much as the individuals who own Fieros do.

Yeah I guess its your own preference really. I can reach it from above but theres no room and If i take the heat shield off by the tranny fluid majigy I can get it from below.

Another question is... Do I tighten the 9/16" nut on the back of the unit or the big 1 3/16" black part? (the actual sending unit itself)

I can tighten the small 9/16" nut but it wont seem to get tight it just wants to keep spinning.
Thanx for your input btw!

Ok omit the part about the 9/16" nut keep spinning, I got it to go tight and that part is good. Where to go from here?

Always use the 9/16 part. The large black plastic part will break if too much torque is applied. What kind of a problem are you having with your oil pressure?

oil pressure looks great but the leak is definitely coming from the oil sending unit. I'm not sure if its the unit itself or the tube that goes into it.

I just tightened her down not too much and it still leaks but not as much as it did before. It use to be a steady drip but not anymore. Any ideas?

Tube that it goes in to?? On the 4 cyl it screws directly into the block. You can try some pipe dope on the upper threads but leave the lower ones bare so they will ground to the block. I do not recommend teflon tape.

If it is the sending unit itself that is leaking it will have to be replaced. They are not considered repairable.

2farnorth, sorry i forgot it sits right on the block on the 4's. Yeah I guess I better take it in and get it fixed. The weird thing is my pressure seems normal. Oh well, at least I slowed it down and no where my leak is coming from now. Thanks everybody, other input is welcome!
