To remove the inner front tie-rod on the 1986 GT you must do the folllowing:
1. Remove the cotter pin from the outer tie rod end, remove the castle nut and separate the end from the knuckle. The tie rod should be level with the ground when you do this, otherwise it will be a bear to separate (may still be difficult if rusted in)
2. Loosten the jam nut on the inner tie rod at the outer tie rod end and use a bright colored spray paint to mark the threads for reassembly.
3. Remove the rack and pinion boot clamp (if you are careful it can be reused, or you can use a zip tie instead) and push back the boot.
4. Use adjustable wrenches (or preferably the correct size wrench) to unscrew the inner tie rod from the steering rack
5. Reassembly is the reverse of the process. Adjust the new parts as close as possible to the old length (the paint tells you how many threads to screw in the outer tie rod). Use antisieze on the tie rod to knuckle joint for future removal.
6. Go and get an alignment - you will need it.
