STP. whatever the book recommended. i almost bought the fram, but the STP is twice the size. i dunno, maybe the book was wrong but the stp is about 3-4 inches long and the fram was about 2 inches long
I recommend staying away from Fram anything, try the larger A/C Delco. Pure One is a nice filter if you can find it, if your running synthetic its a good match for extended drain intervals.

click on the "forums" link on the left hand side, and read up.
the forum is non fiero related so I think it's ok to post the link (right?)
Anyhow - when I had my formula, I used the ac delco pf52 i think, worked fine. ac delco filters are usually pretty decent, so is the napa gold (made by wix).
I see several posts choosing a particular filter because of its size. I believe you are missing a key component in your decision making. If a filter is larger but the ability to filter is worse than a smaller volume filter, then I would go with the smaller volume filter with the better filterability (is that a word?)
There are several sites out there to check for various filter tests. Most are simply homemade type tests. You should contact the filter manufacturer(s) that you are interested in and see if they are willing to give you the beta ratio of their particular filter. Most likely, you will not get this information. Please share if you do.
The best test methods for filters should correspond to an ASTM test method. Most likely a 4-pass test would be most beneficial in knowledge.
I currently work for a vendor neutral company, therefore I cannot make a specific recommendation, but since the question was asked of what we use on our cars--Every car I own has a PureOne filter and MobilOne oil. I am currently using a 2000 Jetta as my daily driver, 1200 miles per week, running on the same oil for 14000 miles. Filter changes and oil analysis at 5k intervals to check for abnormal wear.
You will here a lot of people say "X filter is the same as Y filter. If you cut them open you can see they are the same". Remember, a filter's ability to remove particles is on the microscopic level, well below what is visible with the naked eye.

Welcome FieroOilAnalyst You sound like you are sort of in the oil business and you are right about Mobil 1 It can't be beat. I am going to look up on the Pure one filter, I don't think I have seen one. Don

Thanks Don. I plan on soaking as much information from the folks here as I can on several issues that I am sure to run into in my restoration process. Hopefully I can return the favor by sharing some of my knowledge in my field.
I've been involved with various aspects of oil analysis for the past 12 years. Part of my job is to predict equipment failure based on laboratory results from used oil samples. I figure if I can help the people here do the same with their "babies", the payback of good usable knowlege will be great.

Your saying that because I use the larger "Oil Filter" (from a 3.1L Lumina Minivan) that the filtration is worse than if i used the stock sized filter? they are the same filter, cept one is twice as tall..
If they are all the same construction, there should be no difference.. except more filtering element. how can that be worse?
BTW, im currently using a K&N, but only to try it out.. i havent noticed any difference.. Next filter will be a ACDelco Unit..
I will probably get flamed on here, but I use wal mart supertech ST3980 filters and supertech oil in all my cars. The newest car I own is a 1994, I change my oil and filter every 3000 miles and have not had an engine oil related failure, and the price is right. Oh yeah, I hate paying extra for all those oil advertisements too!

Have you tested Amsoil?? Id like to see the results compared to mobil 1, which is what I used before 5w30, switched to amsoil and I can actually feel a difference...Im never using another oil again...according to testing I read that mobil 1 left a wear scar 4x as much as amsoil....so i was sold...
Im running a K&N Filter with Amsoil. I have recommended this combination to many people due to the fact that together they tend to protect and lube your engine better than most others out there.

The "Butt Dyno" isnt very accurate.. I seriously doubt any "Major" power gains because of the oil you use..

I felt a difference in that the engine ran smoother and didnt have dry oil starved startups like I was having with mobil 1...as to feeling more powerful I can only assume a smoother running engine would produce more hp..and dont dis the butt dyno, its all some of us have!!

I'm fairly new to auto mechanics, but I think Fram's get a bad rap. From everything I've read, their X2 filters are top notch. I'm using the Fram X2 version of the PF52 on my 3.1L (along with mobil 1 synthetic oil, I should also add that I have a windage tray in my engine). I know this thread's about the 2.8, but I just wanted to stand up for fram since everyone's doggin them.
It seems some people have had bad experiances with the cheep frams in the past and won't leave an open mind to their newer ones. Also, people who cut open oil filters to see how they look on the inside think the cheep frams look, well, cheep inside.

I think that Fram has earned the image that they have. They are one of the cheepest filters to buy and they are also one of the cheepest made. Every study that I have ever read confirms this (there are two studies listed already on this thread).
Remember, if you change your oil often enough you almost do not need a quality filter, the crud will be carried out in the oil. But if you want to protect your engine better an extra dollar is very cheap insurance.
i am rebuilding my 2.8 and will be using either a pure one or mobil. i read something wierd on crane cams's website:
"Crane Cams does not recommend the use of synthetic oils during the initial break-in period for a new camshaft. Use a good quality grade of naturally formulated motor oil during this period."
