Since I am thinking of moving up to a SBC in the future, I also started thinking about gas. I know the gas milage won't be horrible, but it won't be what I'm getting now. I don't feel like hitting the gas station every week just cause my car only holds 10 gallons.
Anyway, I was considering a fuel cell in addition to the gas tank. Feasible? Can it be mounted in the trunk, I don't like the idea of leaving my spare in the garage and hoping for the best. I heard somewhere that fuel cells don't blow up or anything because of how theyre made. Is there any truth to that, or is putting it in the trunk just plain stupid? Furthermore, is there a fuel cell (or maybe 2 next to each other?) that would fit where the stock gas tank is, nullifying all other placement questions?

I plan on putting a 12 gallon fuel cell in the spare tire location. This will also help you with a better weight distribution. I suggest not putting it in the trunk since it will get crushed in a rear end accident.
Some cutting may be needed, you can get a fuel cell custom made to fit.

take out that useless spare and put the fuel cell up there along with your stock tank i hit the gas station 2 times a week with my 2.8, what kinda milage you get.

You're gonna have to give up one or the other. If it's me, I give up the trunk. It would be cool to have a quick disconnect way of installing it and removing it in the trunk. Course you could do the same with the spare tire area and run gravity lines to the front of the tank.
The lower, narrower part of the trunk looks like it should hold 16-18 gallons. Put a fuel pump in the fuel cell made to fit that space, run the line over to the filler hose, run the pump with a switch in the cab. The trunk is protected by a steel bumper, just like the tank is on a Mustang. Run the vent line from the fuel cell over to the filler neck above the point where the fuel line goes in. Fill the cell up from the back by opening the trunk and accessing the cell. Driving along, fuel level gets low, push the button to refill the main fuel tank from the cell until the guage reads near full, keep on driving.

Taurus, where did you get your fuel cell from, or was it custom? Thanks!

Nice idea, but that would do wonders for the already aft CG. 16 x 7 = 112lbs is quite an arm.

What I'd really like to consider, though, is fitting a fuel cell (or two smaller ones) in where the stock gas tank is. That way, you don't lose trunk space or spare tire. Anyone think this could work?
BTW Kyle, I usually only fill up once a week and maybe I make it a week and a half if I'm really just cruisin. Lead foot driving = lots of pit stops. Just depends on how I feel.
