My setup has lots of clearance (up to 2" at sides and top) with no body, hood, hinge modifications. All stock GT body parts. With the air cleaner at carb, your still using superheated air.

I agree that you are getting colder air than I am and I would like to find a way to duct cooler air to my air cleaner.
I have checked the air filter after short trips around town and after long highway cruises and it has never felt "superheated" but it is warm.
I feel that my carb is jetted correctly for the conditions it works in.
I'm getting 15 mpg in town and 25 mpg on the highway, not bad for a carb. BTW the engine looks stock but it is thoroughly modified.

tstroud: I thought about this with my upcoming project, but I always worried about airflow, as in, the decklid scoop is about venting hot air out of the engine compartment. Does enough air get into the engine, especially at speed?

Roger, like that setup a lot.

Roger, like that setup a lot.

I think it is getting plenty of air, it's the temperature of the air that is in question.
I haven't measured the temperature with anything other than my hand. I don't think it is worth my time.
Getting the coldest air possible isn't always a good thing anyway, especially with a carb.
I do know it runs considreably better with this setup than it did with the Edelbrock "foamie" I used to run.
Another thing I like about Rogers setup is he is getting clean air, my filter gets dirty fast. although K&N claims they filter better with a little dirt on them.
The rep I talked to at K&N said a 9 inch filter with an X-Stream top would be plenty for a 350 chevy. Rogers filter looks a little small to me.

I like what Roger has come up with but I am going to stick to this setup for now.

That filter is close to the same as a lot of LT1 Corvettes, Camaros, Firebirds are using. Looks a little small maybe, but the inside is also exposed, so its almost double what it looks like. You could also hook up any type of element in the well. You could use a square box with square element like in most cars these days. Im told the 3" tube is sufficient for almost any carbed engine. I thought maybe the Jeep cover may be restrictive too, but didnt notice any performance change. It was on I think a 318 Jeep V8, and we know stuff like that is always overengineered by manufacturer. My engine is 383 cu in, and it dont seem to bog at all from lack of air. In fact, seems more responsive than before. With V8s in these cars everything is experimental , I didnt want to add scoops or holes anywhere just for an air filter, but thats just me.

Roger, What air filter were you running before?
I think we can agree the Edelbrock "foamie" isn't very good.
Mine leaked dirt and was fairly restrictive.
I don't miss it at all.

I tried that Foamie thats has open mesh at top, and also a Weiand triangle one that was also too big across and a little too high. Both hit the decklid under accel. I was afraid id bust the carb casting. The new setup looks pretty cool too though. Looks a little hi tech
