Ok guys (girls too), I have an '88 Formula, that did not come from the factory with cruise. I drive a fair amount on the highway, and am looking into the pheasability(sp?) of adding it to my car. The stalk, canister, everything? How much, what do I need, how do I do it, is it worth it. Asked "the list" a while back and never received anything about what I was asking. Thanks.

installing cruise on an 87+ fiero is a bit diferant from erlier years in that the cruise function is built into the ECM. At least this is true on the 4 cyl. I think the V6 may have done something similar, but I can't confirm it yet.

That I can tell..... Cruise was not available as a dealer installable option. What that usually means is that the wiring harness may not have the extra lines in it. (For example the Power trunk latch is fully wired in all 85+ Fiero. all you need do is drop in the rest of the parts.)

That being said. at the very least you need to tear apart the column to install the corect turn signal stalk. then install the wiring. then install the control pod and throttle linkage. You also have to install the brake/clutch switches.

How much worse this is depends on if the none cruise cars have the plugs in the harness or not. I really don't know..... I've thought of doing this, but haven't had time or access to an 87+ that I can strip parts from. Judging by the earlier ones I've looked at a bit.... It's not going to be easy.

I can tell you for pretty sure that you can't use some or maybe all of the parts from a pre 87 car..... Pre87 uses a seperate module for cruise. Like I said above... 87+ cars have it built into the ECM..... Add in the alteration to the throttle linkages required by the 700 TBI....... (the 300 unit used thru 86 is completely diferant) How much change there is in the V6 and it's electricals I don't know, but on a 4 there are plenty.

Summit sells an aftermarket cruise system for about $90. You might consider this. I know it is not factory, but it works and does not require any major mods.

Hi,

I just received my cruise control that I ordered from JC Whitney this weekend. It is a VSS controlled unit that looks just like the original. It takes it's signals from the speedometer VSS unit, the tachometer, and the brake light wires. it looks pretty simple to install although it will probable take an entire evening. I paid $136.00 using the 15% off coupon on the back of my catalog. Tell them you have catalog number 630T with the program code number AJDZ4 on the back cover. It is good for 15% on any order over $150.00
The unit is catalog number 78ND7574UF which lists for $159.95. When you order they will ask make and model of car, whether it has air bags, wipers (intermittent), horn or dimmer in the control stalk, size engine and transmission. It took a week to get mine.

Good luck.

I just got a response from Ed Parks at The Fiero Factory and he also told me I would be better off just getting either a JC Whitney, Summit or another aftermarket company. He says that there is so much that is required from a parts car that it would cost me over $200 labor just to have everything removed, if I were to have him supply me with everything, I think I will probably go with the JC Whitney setup in a while(have to do my clutch job first. Thanks.
