Getrag transmissions are getting very difficult to find here in the USA and when they come up for sale they are priced very high. The last one that I saw for sale had a $1000 price tag on it Even if you locate one a rebuild is probably needed for that 40 year old transmission.
Suggest going to the F23. Easier to find, newer, less expensive, it will both right in and parts are available for the conversion.

Not to mention... shipping to Oz will be crazy expensive. Have you checked if there are any compatible transmissions that were sold on Australian domestic market (Opel, Vauxhall, etc) that may have the correct bellhousing? The F23 that Dennis is referring to came in 2000-2002 Chev Cavalier/ Pontiac Sunfire versions that were paired to a crap 2200 OHV engine that was likely not sold in Europe or Australia since it is a dog.... almost as bad as the Iron Duke. The Ecotec engine came with different F23 trans bellhousing, so that won't work

Tough spot to be in. To find, and ship a good trans to Australia will be crazy expensive.

I have found one here in a suburb relatively in south western Sydney, I will take my transmission in my Ute to them and compare it before I pay them. They are asking $110.Right now it's easter Holidays and they are not open until Tuesday

To me, that looks like the wrong bellhousing to fit the 60degree V 6 in a Fiero. It is in an Ecotec car.

Do a search here on PFF. I know people have put the 2 different F23 "side by side" for photos.

I would be very surprised if the 2200 OHV motor was available in Australia, since it was an outdated dog even back in its' day...

To be honest, it may make more sense to just swap an Ecotec motor AND the matching trans into your car. Far better than the 2.8 and at least you can test the engine and trans first

The Ecotec swap has been done many times and is well documented. It is light, reliable, great on fuel, and has potential for far more power than the 2.8

From what I have read the Ecotec Getrag is internally similar to the Fiero Getrag meaning it can be rebuilt using those internal parts. Haven't done this so the information may or may not be 100% accurate. A transmission shop should know.
