1988 2.8 V6, Cradle, A/T, Suspension, Parts, Headers, Holley F/P Regulator (Page 1/2)

Update, I've checked the cradle and found it has some rust pitting on the front arms. It might work for a stock engine but I would not try to use it for anything heavier.

Doing an engine swap (to an LFX V6) so the old drivetrain must go. The engine is a 2.8L V6 installed by the previous owner. It has only about 3,000 miles on it. The engine was rebuilt by the last owner who added forged pistons, roller rocker arms, Holley adjustable fuel pressure regulator and tube headers. The car was never completed and sat for almost 10 years due to life/work/divorce. New parts since I bought the car in 2019 are distributor, wires, plugs, ignition module (OEM), alternator, cat converter, and muffler. Injectors were cleaned last year. Also includes the scarce 1988 cradle (See not at top of this posting) and a factory 125 automatic transmission.

The engine has run well with useful power up to 6,500 RPM but began to develop a lifter tapping noise. Compression test about a year ago were in the 150-160s. I opened it removing the intake manifold a month ago and found one lifter very worn and suspect the cam also needs replacement. The starter could use an overhaul also.

The transmission shifts well but the lockup clutch has begun to fail to release when hot. The tripots are worn and 'clunk' when shifting into gear. Axle bearings are quiet.

Other parts included. Set of rear trunnions, axles, rear suspension arms & trailing links. Harness from ECU to engine. Two ECUs, one with Thermomaster Chip. Cruise control actuator & vacuum tank, factory air filter, mufflers and tube headers, rear sway bar (no trunnion connectors). Assorted other spare parts specific to the engine.

Things I've done to the engine are the intake manifold and head inlets have been port matched to the gaskets. The ignition module has been relocated from the distributor to a separate heat sink to prolong it's life.

Please call or text Mike at 605 381 4452. All for $500. Parts are located in Rathdrum, ID. Can deliver to SEA/PDX/Tri-Cities for $100.

If you don't want the whole enchilada then make an offer on what you are interested in. One way or another this will be sold.

When a cam goes early in life like that does that indicate the break-in after rebuilding wasn't done correctly?

Yes I think the cam installation was not done properly and in the 3K miles I put on it, it ground itself down badly. But until it wore itself out the engine was very happy to rev to 6,500 and pulled very well. Sigh.

Do you have pictures of these parts? Are you willing to separate the rubber intake tube from the canister and sell it to me?

So far the Headers, Roller Rockers, Air Inlet Hose, Fuel Injectors & Regulator have been sold. Thanks to the buyers.

Other small parts are still for sale, I'll make a new list when time permits. Right now I'm deep into the engine swap on the car, currently modifiing the cradle. For anyone contemplating a LFX/6T70 swap it's Big! Since I bought a complete Impala I'm trying to re-use as much of that car to keep costs under control. Re-using the Impala motor mounts is a continuing non-trivial exercise, but I'm making progress slowly.

The 2.8L engine & automatic transmission will be scrapped unless someone wants them. So if you need/want a 2.8L engine (no headers, valve train, accessories, ignition or intake) for FREE give me a call and you can haul it away. This engine has a bad cam, It burned no oil, had no leaks, had good oil pressure and would rev to 6,500 RPM per the tach. But it should be torn down and inspected (which I didn't do since I ass-u-me'd it was good) before use.

I saw that in the pic. Certainly looks like it.
