I have a shortened shifter in my wife's 84 and we have the higher style cup holder. It hasn't been a problem for us but you do have to shift around your drink sometimes.

The tall liners are 2-3/8" and the short liners are 1-9/16"

The shop on the property I bought ended up being non-usable so I`m going to have to build another one, however, I`m not sure when I will get to doing that so no cupholders for right now.
