88 Coupe gets a 3.4 (Page 8/57)

Spent the morning cleaning and painting. The transmission was filthy from top to bottom. I need to grind off the rear corner of the engine for the automatic transmission to mount up before I try to put them togeather. Maybe I can get that done tomorrorw.

I took a piece of cardboard and made me a tracing of this corner of the 2.8. When using an automatic with this 3.4, this corner of the block must be modified.

the tracing cut out:

and used a grinder to get this:

One step closer.

I finished the block painting yesterday after work. Silver to make it easy to locate leaks of coolant or motor oil. I loosened up the rockers and set the valve lash again just to make sure that the lash was correct before adding the intake and the distributor.

Removed the tape off of the oil filter and filled it with oil to soak the filter element wit clean oil. Poured the excess oil onto the camshaft and added 4 more quarts in to the valley. I then put a 1/4" extension into my drill and put an 8mm socket on the end . Added some tape for insurance and started the oil priming of the engine. Pretty quickly I had the first two rockers (# 6) leaking oil over the tops. I had to put rags around the valve springs to keep from getting oil onto my garage floor.

After adding the rags I finished oiling all of the rockers with the drill

I need to drill out the one hole on the alternator side of the block. It is threaded, and needs to be drilled out so a bolt can thread into the transmission there.
This is the hole I need to drill out. I have a bolt threaded into it for the engine stand.

Did a dance of the old Fiero Two Step this morning. One step forward , and two or three backwards. I got the engine and the transmission bolted up. I had checked the torque converter several times as I was tightening down the transmission bolts. Didn't want to jam the converter. When I had them all tightened up, I reached in to make sure the converter was still free spinning. NO WAY , JOSE. I tried every thing I could think of to get it free, even moving the engine about 1/4" away from the transmission face. Still jammed up. Put everything away and came in the house to cool off.

There it sits!!!

Well I was able to remove the engine from the transmission today. I found the converter still on the flywheel. I almost $hit!!!. I never expected this as there were no bolts holding the converter on the flex plate. I had to pry it off of the engine. Measured it the nose of the converter. It measured .824". as it was supposed to be. I called the transmission shop where I got the converter, and they were able to give me a measurement.I had already put the engine back on the engine stand, so I could just barely see inside the pilot hole in the crankshaft. RUSTY , big time. I will remove the rust tomorrow with my Dremel Tool, and see what gives.

This was wonderful news for me

Took the engine off of the stand this afternoon and cleaned out the pilot hole in the end of the crankshaft. All is well in the world again. I am gonna put the engine and transmission back together tomorrow AM.

I got the new rubber pieces that hold the PCV valve and the air tube in the forward valve cover in today's mail. Also picked up a new distributor rotor this morning.
