Haus of Guru: The Ultimate Car Build Off (Page 36/58)

The sale of my shop fell through, so we got stuck in Joisey.

We still want to pack up and go, but it will probably be a few more years before either I can sell the shop or be able to pack it all up and convince Southern Kentuckians that German cars are better than American trucks.

Charlie and I spoke the other day and we are still on track for his car being dropped off on the 17th.

Madcurl, I'm not ignoring your post, I just don't have the answer for you. I can say that that brake setup is definitely the nicest set of brakes I have ever driven on (except for a Porsche 997), but the pedal feel is pretty amazing. The adjustable proportioning valve once dialed in makes it even better.

Had the larger tires installed after Dave finished his final check on the car when it came back from Archie. The shop I went to were the only guys I would trust. In the end we were able to determine the rear wheel bearings were bad. Dave's going to take care of that and do some "go even faster" mods. The brakes are so choice. I highly recommend them.

Just got the car to Dave. Looking forward to the mods he has in mind.

and so we start the next chapter in this saga.......

This year's mods are pretty simple. About a week's worth of build time and then tuning, dyno and Charlie will pick it up.

We started with installing Held Motorsport's front suspension kit. This required cutting off the original spring perch and welding it back to the chassis. This allows clearance for the coil over shock. Here are a few pics. Sorry about the poor quality....my camera was acting up at the time....

The next part of the build will be to drop out the drivetrain and POR 15 the engine bay and cradle. While that is out, we will be upgrading the cylinder heads (ZZP stage 3), full size intercooler, Gen V, blower, 77mm N* throttle body, powdercoated aluminum valve covers, upgraded fuel pump, RD upgraded transmission brackets and his ultimate shift kit, and making the engine bay show quality so Charlie can take some 1st place trophies in addition to making the car hit Charlie's desired whp.

looks good. I have an 88, and I have been looking into the HT motorsports Tubular UCA/LCA set up. Looking forward to seeing how you like this. What brake setup is that? HT has a wilwood set up, is that where you got it?

Thanks

Yes it is. I opted for the six piston setup over the four piston he offers. Unmatched stopping power.

Here is a little before shot of the engine.....the body shop got a little dust and overspray baked in.

I really want to see this car take home a shelf of 1st place trophies this year, so we started off with removing the entire drivetrain to POR15 the engine bay and cradle.
The zzp stage 3 heads have arrived....

The red valve covers and yellow body were kind of clashing, so I powdercoated the zzp aluminum covers with a matching Corvette yellow to match the paint on the car.

We upgraded to a gen 5 blower, 77mm throttle body, (it has the XP hot cam), full size intercooler and everything that looked out of place, will be getting refreshing. We also upgraded the transmission and engine mount brackets to Rodney's thicker ones. We have bent the stock ones with the torque produced from a similiar setup.

More to come......

Just curious on what type of MAF sensor you are going to use. I have a 4" throttle body for my gen-5 blower and is the deck lid going to close with that intercooler on there? It looks really high.

I love it.
It seems every time I put a Fiero swap on the lift, our German car business triples. Ryan and I have been going crazy fixing BMW's, Porsche's and MINI's these past two weeks. Charlie's car finally started up today with the new heads, Gen V blower and I fabricated a completely new intercooler setup that I think is the best setup I have done on a 3800. I vacuum filled the reservoir, turned on the key and 30 seconds later, the entire system was bled out. We also changed the intercooler coolant from the VW G12 to BMW blue antifreeze. I found the BMW seemed a little better (personal reasons). I like using a different color coolant in the intercooler so that if a leak develops, it can easily be determined as to whether it is from the intercooler or the cooling system.
Here are some installed pics taken late today.

We wound up also changing a lot of the wiring harness loom that had some overspray on it, and chemical cleaning the parts that needed some touch up. The yellow that we powdercoated matches almost perfectly to the exterior paint.

We had to use the ZZP gen V turndown to clear the decklid on the driver's side. Otherwise, the decklid strut wouldn't be able to be used anymore. I used the LQ4 MAF sensor on this setup. The passenger side had to have the decklid notched slightly, but it is very clean.

I hope to be able to start tuning the car tomorrow or Thursday and then get the WOT tuning done this weekend with the wideband.
If all goes well, we will have some impressive dyno numbers to post up within the next week or two.

Ordered my new wheels today...Forgeline SP3P in brushed finish with polished lip. 19x9s up front and 19x11s on the rear. I expect delivery in Mid April. Ordering the tires soon as well.
