I upgraded the '87 SE I owned a 1/4 century ago to early '90s Grand Am SE 16 inchers...I used 205/55 tires on all four corners, which were stock for the GA. Now, with my '87 GT, I have procured a set of remanufactured wheels of the same (from THREE different suppliers), as I'm not a big fan of the lace GT wheels.
Q: Do I stick with 205s all the way 'round, or should I bump up to a 225 on the rear like the factory did? From what I've read the GT wheels are all the same width for an '87...or be I wrong.
Thanks.[This message has been edited by DaveB1701 (edited 12-28-2025).]

From what I've seen, the '87 GT had 225s on the rear and 205s on the front, all on 15x7" rims. Your car will look better with slightly wider tyres on the rear.

GTs came with 205s and 215s.
Make sure that there is enough rear clearance with whatever tire you choose, since the offsets are a bit greater, by ~1/2". I'm pretty sure you'll be okay, though. Maybe someone else will jump in.

Here's my SE, parked at the beach in Biloxi MS, back in '99 while stationed at Keesler AFB.

That's a nice SE! I always liked that color on an aero notchie. Especially with "other-than-black" rockers and lower fascias.

Thanks! Lousy quality pic - a scan of old school 4X6 photograph, prior to digital. It was a V6 5-speed w/ around 70,000 on it when I purchased following a deployment to Italy while stationed @ McGuire AFB in NJ. I wet-sanded the thing down for weeks after work in the base housing parking lot & had a repaint done (yeah, it was dark red metallic over black originally). The logos were done on a cutter-plotter at work with scraps left over from the C-141 refurb (paint) shop. I regret selling it, hence my recent nostalgia tour with a '87 GT, which I've already spent nearly 3 times the purchase price on... [This message has been edited by DaveB1701 (edited 12-28-2025).]
