Got the engine out of my Fiero, getting it cleaned and gasketed up, etc. Pulled the valve cover off and was greeted by these either odd casting issues, or i have some unknown issues? Engine had great oil pressure and compression was great... but this strikes me as odd... If it was round or an oval, it wouldn't surprise me.. but for the sheer fact this looks like it was worn down or punched through seems really odd

Although, just saw this on Ronald Fingers video, says it's typical GM quality control. Guess i'll leave it be unless someone says otherwise.
The funny thing is, my cylinder head looks almost spotless compared to his cylinder head... now i'm almost wondering if my engine was replaced at some point or rebuilt....?

Are you referring to those irregular shaped holes in the head casting? I suppose if they just lead to where oil drains down into the crankcase, then they're fine.
Yes, the valve train area at the top of your head looks clean enough to eat off of. Very nice. Quite a contrast to the outside of your engine!

Nothing to worry about. Just GM quality control of the 1980's; doesn't look nice but has no imact on engine performance. ------------------ "Turbo Slug" - '87 Fiero GT. 3800 turbo. - The fastest Fiero in France! @turboslugfiero https://youtu.be/hUzOAeyWLfM

i just cleaned off so much gunk - it was gnarly! I saw the block was orange, but after cleaning the gunk off, it's REAL orange and kind of scattered with the paint. I don't believe GM ever painted the duke orange... between the orange paint, blue RTV and such a clean head, 5 bucks says this was a reman or rebuillt engine.. Explains why I have great compression and oil pressure after sitting 20 years in the desert area of Oregon. Clutch also looks fairly fresh..
Time to swap all the gaskets and get it back in the car.

another person who saved a fiero from oregon? i got all 3 of mine from the Eugene area, awful place i wouldn't go back lol. good luck on the duke and if you have any weird seemingly unfixable high idle issues check your harness, just fixed 2 84s and a 86 with melted map wires

I live in Oregon and will say, Eugene sucks... haha, I live in McMinnville, cozy little town, work in Newberg. Got this guy from Bend, which was good considering how dry it is up there in the high desert.
and will keep that in mind!
