High CFM Radiator fan replacement for 2.8L (Page 1/1)
jrr DEC 14, 10:33 PM
I am looking to replace my original 16" Puller coolant fan with an aftermarket high CFM 2000 + fan or just the motor. I have mine out. It does work but I am trying to get the engine cooler since I am in S. Florida. Any suggestions for an easy swap? Would like to keep the same plug if possible.

The fan works when the coolant temperature reaches 200* or something in that area. You can replace with a cooling fan switch that energizes at 180*. That may help.

A very common mod is the installation of Rodney Dickman's 210° on and 200° off fan switch, as opposed to the factory fan switch which energizes at 235°. (The use of the factory 195° thermostat is retained.)

proform 67016 seems to be the choice
if you dont have a shroud i believe a few toyota trucks and cars have ones close enough, i know a few 90s gm cars like grand prix/am and the caddilacs have them but the shroud may need to be cut in half for the fieros radiator width and then have the end sealed up
i would also reccomend like everyone else in the forum sp far as said which is to get a fan switch that operates at a lower temp, i believe Rodney sells one but they are possible to get elsewhere but i dont remember the thread size off the top of my head to look one up for you

Hi JRR... just wanted to add a few things.

I used to live in the Plantation / Davie / Cooper City area of South Florida. When I used to drive my Fiero regularly, it ran so cool that the radiator fan would never actually come on. In the dead of summer, I could have the car parked (in the shade) with the engine running, and the car would sit at a cool 180 degrees without the fan turning on. I only say that since I want to emphasize that a larger fan is just a bandaid. If your car is stock, and it's running well, it shouldn't really need a bigger fan.

Check to make sure your under-body coolant lines aren't crimped or bent (shops liked to use them as jack points back in the day because they're morons). If your coolant hasn't been flushed and changed out in a while, I recommend that also.

I use Rodney's lower temp thermostat, which I think Patrick above mentioned. But I also use a 180 degree thermostat in the car, since... yeah, it is South Florida.

I go with a 50/50 mix, and add in a bottle of Redline Water-Wetter (which really does work and is scientifically proven). You want to go with the green stuff. If you go to AutoZone, you'll use the Peak stuff that says it's meant for Older Asian vehicles. They consider 80s American vehicles to be SO incredibly old now that it doesn't even fit in their category... but that's the one that you want to use... especially if you haven't rebuilt the engine and anything on the motor might potentially be original (freeze plugs, some coolant hoses, etc.). The Fiero's cooling system has in some cases, double the capacity of some other cars, so it should run really cool when everything is optimal.

You know, if i'm looking at this image... it almost looks like you could remove the factory fan, and actually modify the shroud to accept the new Proform fan?

Yup, some trimming of the mounting bosses on the aftermarket fan, removing the mounting bars on the OEM fan and six rivets and you're good to go with a 16" fan.

Another vote for the 67016.
Only down side is that it's loud...

I installed a stock replacement motor on my cooling fan, I have my doubts most builds need more than that.
