1984 fiero high idle (Page 1/1)
cartercarbaficionado NOV 17, 09:47 PM
so i decided to help someone work on their 84 iron duke and went through most of the steps to get the idle back to normal and i did suceed. until while he was driving it went back to a 2500 rpm idle. still no vaccum leaks or codes to speak of other than it set the speed sensor code and we havent figured out why just yet since it only did it once
the fiero im working on has been on the forums before and nothing was solved but apparantly if you look at it in person you spot alot of sensors that sure arent the right ones from a previous owner, i have replaced all of those so im not quite sure what else it could be

found some of it? shorted together map wires under the loom near the egr
and how much continuity are the tps wires supposed to have to ground? i assume 0 but im not sure

found out part of why the belt explodes at higher rpm. whoever put this engine together for my buddy is gonna get a stern talking to (and possibly have an entire rotisserie chicken thrown at them.) now if i can get the map wires to not be melted on the stupid egr block off plate we might actually get somewhere.

The nice thing is I don't see a whole lot of rust... but I do see a lot of oil and grease... man... that's the worst, haha...

That crank pulley looks like it's so very close to the timing cover...

yeah that was kind of a tip off someone did some bad things, the alt fan is shattered and he had no idea since apparantly the last time he posted about anything with it here ogre gave him a real hard time and the car sat since then. its getting fixed and cleaned now and in a few years it will likely get a 3800 swap for usability unless the duke lasts and is generally issue free

I really key'ed in on this. I know Ogre meant well, and... well... we've already beat that horse. But I think it's so important the perspective that we have when dealing with people that need help. They won't always be appreciative, but you never know the impact your comments might have on someone ... both good and bad.

I'm glad you're helping this guy out Carter Carbs.

Like I said in PM, I have a bunch of parts, and I don't need them. It's going to take me a bit, but I'll go through all the stuff I have and mail it out. Once my daughter's car is done, there's very little I think I need to "keep" at that point. So, an extra gauge set is not necessary. I have a completely working gauge set, but I might be stealing the back printed part off of it, and will be using it for testing as I swap out different LED bulbs to get the look my daughter wants.

Make a list of what you need "immediately" and then make a list of what you need "eventually."

I'll give you all the stuff I have for free and pay for shipping too. Your 86 Iron Duke cyl head made the difference between $25k of money wasted, into $25k of a good learning experience! Haha... so... I really appreciate it.

its mostly accessory drive parts (crank pulley and im making him buy the fiero store alt so i have someone to yell at when it fails, mostly joking but they have a much cheaper one than oriellys) and a few measurements of the tps sensor wires continuity to ground so we can make sure the harness isnt completely wasted
eventually list is super long since his car isnt too far off a really nice example but is missing alot of things (mostly in the frunk. trying to find a complete later model car for the 88 formula right now and im gonna give him the spare and jack out of it plus the mounts, or ill get off my butt and section out a frunk lower panel to fit a full size spare and glass it in)
as for the head? im quite happy it ended up being perfect as it tells me that built engines block has a minor crack or something else causing oil and water to mix (it sure wasnt the headgasket or the head. it seemed pretty flat with a machinsts edge and feeler gauges and i wasnt able to find cracks with a pressure test or a magnaflux job when we had it out of the original 84 it was in which was white, straight piped and had factory dealer decals i wanted) so ill likely build a s10 block for that if i end up ever using those parts again
also here is his car, i couldnt find his threads on his original issue but everyone said vaccum leak and thats the only thing that wasnt wrong lol. ive mostly been having him check if parts are good with a meter or for the temp sensor unplugging it and seeing what happens and then replacing whatever makes it worse.....so far 50 dollars in and it runs amazing and did idle down and now its just finding that last thing keeping it stuck (pretty sure its the map sensor and tps wires based on the speedo code litterally saying to check tps setting)
