Need new power for brake lights. (Page 1/2)
Tweeder NOV 11, 09:29 PM
86 notchie. I have an led tail lights set up and was told I need to cut the brake wire and run a new one as the fiero uses the brake and turn in the same wire. Is here an easier way than running a new wire from the front to the backs? I have to wire in the rear leds all seperate into the harness with 1157 pigtails.

I have an 88 Mera that was built on notchie chassis. This might help with your brake lights. I cut the white wire and the brake and turn signals operate independently now.

To disable the brake switch from activating the rear orange (outside) turn lights on a Fiero SE based Mera, do the following: Locate the C500 wiring connector mounted on the inside of the 'frame' rail just behind the battery and just in front of the strut tower structure. It has two multi-wire plugs; a front plug for the rear lights and the other is for the engine. Look at the front plug and you should see a LOOP of white wire that sticks out about three inches. Cut that looped wire and cover the cut ends with electrical tape. If you press the brake pedal now, you should see one half of each red tail light glow and the high mounted brake light (in the rear window) illuminate, but not the orange (turn) tail lights. The Parking/headlight switch should cause the other bulb in the red tail light to glow. The rear orange turn lamps should flash both bulbs in the selected housing when you use the turn signal.

Replaced taillight bulbs on my notchback with LED units and they work as they worked before. The only thing I had to do is replace the flasher with an electronic unit.

They're not bulbs, they're a full replacement unit. I have 1157 pigtails that I have to wire in.

I found the 1985 schematic if *this* be any help...

The ORIGINAL Fiero taililghts are bulbs on notchbacks and fastbacks, If you wish to replace the original 1157 bulbs you can purchase direct plug in LED lamps. Its easy, but maybe a slight chamfering of the sockets is needed. Just screw them in, No rewiring will be needed.

That well honestly looks cheesy and terrible.

If you don't want a Fiero, sell it and get a ricermoble

Interesting taillights.
I like the sequential effect and the backup lights are very bright.

I installed a sequential system on my son's 88 notchie some years ago that look great. They use the stock tail lights and bulb locations.

May I ask where you got those units from?

But as to your question: No, you do not have to run a new wire from the brake pedal - HOWEVER - you will need to run a separate wire for the brake lights. Since your car is a 86 this is simple to do and, all changes can be done at the C500 plug (I did something similar several years ago).

Basically you want to change the wiring from the coupe to match the GT wiring. You can google search and download a copy (free) of the Fiero factory service manual for all the drawing, but here are the ones that are relevant:

The wires that are currently brake/turn (at the back) become turn only when you cut/remove the white wire at pins H8 /C7 of the C500 plug - this is marked as not used on the GT in the diagram. I removed the 2 pins from the connector, cut 1 end off leaving most of the wire on 1 of the pins for the next step.

Then you will need to run a new wire from the C500 plug pin J9 to connect to your brake lights.

I used one of the pins removed above (H8 and C7) and connected the new brake light wire to the wire crimped to the pin (solder and heat shrink) and installed this in the J9 spot. I do have a source for new pins, but I will have to look that up.

Run the new wire along the original harness - zip tie (you have to remove the wheel liner - I think I also removed the wheel for more space).

I did this back in 2006
