Perhaps it is a Getrag Select issue? {guessing} ------------------ Original Owner of a Silver '88 GT Under 'Production Refurbishment' @ 136k Miles

By any chance, have you checked the clips that hold the shift brackets to the transmission? Sometimes these clips break and it's hard to get the transmission in gear.

i had the car at hershey car show and was trying to get back in the garage. I have a 24 ft wide and have 3 cars in it so it is tight moving the fiero back and forth to get close to the other car I was doing a lot of shifting reverse to first when the lever would go to the right position. had to push the car back and fourth by hand. It is parked for the winter so I have time to fix it with some advice how it do it i i

That's the select cable. Yes, the Getrag's select cable is notorious for eventually becoming difficult to move... as the way the end of it is positioned in the Fiero's engine bay, it's prone to water infiltration and internal corrosion.

Check your select cable; it is the cable that provides the side-to-side motion in the shift assembly PS - Of course, check the other end of the select cable at the gear box...

You're talking about the shifter boot? Don't try to remove it....
Spin the shifter knob off from the shifter Remove the ash trays Remove the four screws under the ash tray Remove the shifter console which includes the boot {I believe the boot was 'glued' at the factory}

Is there preventative maintenance that be done to extend the life and performance of the shift linkage system?
