I am sure most of you have heard the controversy of the Fiero Engine Oil Dip Sticks not being marked properly and thus people underfilling their engine oil.
I don't member a recall on this.
Has anyone removed a 2.8L V6 Oil Pan (carefully) from a cool engine with a dip stick that showed full and looked to see how much oil is in the pan?
I always put in 1/2 quart over the fill mark just to be safe. I think under a quart overfill should not blow out any seals.

I always fill it with the amount specified, I only use the dipstick as a "check"in between fills. I think 4 quarts is the specified amount for a 2.8 v6 with the small filter. If you fill it with that amount, it's correct, then check what the dipstick says and remember that that is full.
I think the "issue"was with the 4 cyl, they had too little oil specced to start with, the recalls replaced the dipstick or the oil pan or something, to increase oil capacity. I don't know that the v6 has had recurrent issues with oil level unless there are leaks.

I've never heard of a 'dipstick controversy' regarding any GM vehicle.

The miscalibrated Dip Stick... Just one of many folklore from Fieros I guess [smile].

as i understand it the 1984 fiero had a smaller oil pan in order to fit it in the car.people were letting the engine run dry.gm 'fixed'it by issuing a new dipstick with a higher oil level.

This was an "84" thing. Might have been a band-aid by GM because people let their engines run low on oil. I've heard of lots worse suggestions.

(Note; A) This is a joke, and B) I'll shut up now)[This message has been edited by cvxjet (edited 10-08-2025).]

I just went through this on my daughter's 85... the recall was as a result of the 84, but it affected all 1984-1986 motors. It was a kit that basically upgraded the 84-86 Fieros with the newer 87-88 dip stick and tube, exhaust manifold heat shield, and a replacement exhaust manifold with the updated heat shielding and ThermAC. It also called for a larger oil filter, which also technically increased the amount of oil as well. The original 4 cyl oil filter was like 2/3rds the size of the one that shows up now when you look up an oil filter for your 4 cyl Fiero. It's basically an inch longer.
