88 Iron Duke Not Getting Fuel (Page 1/2) |

Hey guys, finally got my Iron Duke project back together, and as expected it cranks but doesn't start. The previous owner said he put a new fuel pump on it before he parked it....but that was at least 5 years ago. I checked the pump and I don't hear it coming on. Here's what I've done so far:
1. changed the fuel pump relay in the back behind the driver seat
2. checked the fuses, they're all good. Even the injector relays.
3. Checked the 3 pin connector in the engine bay by the firewall, it looked okay.
4. I ran a jumper wire between the cigar lighter and the ALDL connecter. I can hear it click underneath me, but it doesn't hum or anything.
5. Checked the ground wire by the ECM under the center console. Looks good.
I just wanted to see if there's anything else I need to try before I drop the fuel tank. I don't mind doing it, but if there's a way I can get this running without dropping the tank that would be awesome lol.

Try putting fused +12V at the ALDL 'G' connection which will run the fuel pump without the relay...

I did do that with the cigarette lighter. I just used some wire I had lying around. I can try the fused connection too. Thank you!

If your battery actually has a good charge (should be 12.6v), then I'm afraid you'll be needing to drop the tank.

I have a brand new battery in it so it should be good. I had a feeling I'd have to drop the tank, but I just wanted to make sure I tried everything and covered all my bases before I go to the trouble 😅 thanks!

Once you are certain that voltage is getting to the pump and there is no pumping action you can try the You Tube Car Wizards trick. Have someone sit in the drivers seat and while they turn the ignition key to start, you wack the tank with a rubber mallet enough to shock the pump and start the engine. . According to the Car Wizard this may be enough to get the pump going and the engine started so you can move the car into a garage or drive it a short while. It not a fix but a way to get a bad fuel pump going temporarily. Sorry guys this sounds like good vs bad.
You can try the bump method and might get lucky but possibly dent/breakbsomething not intended, you could disconnect the fuel line to the filter route the hose to a bucket and try/see what you get. The most reliable though is heed what's been stated.

Yeah I'll probably just drop the tank. I just wanted to be sure I had tried everything before I go to the trouble

I've seen this guy! I forgot about that method. I might give it a shot just to see if the pump kicks on but I'll probably end up having to drop the tank if I want it to consistently run. It's in my garage currently so it'll be ok for now. Thanks for the advice though!

Just be sure to jack the car properly, the hoses on an 84 can be a pain, can't say about 88's.
