the only way i see is cut the back of the switch in the middle and then breaking it in half.i don't want to break the plate.

I suggest you long into RockAuto and look up the door switch. They have a couple of very good pictures that should lead you to how to unsnap the switch from the panel. FYI, if you need to replace it, it's a very generic GM part available from Rock Auto or Dorman via Amazon. Oh, if you need to replace it, get one with screws to mount the wires. Some don't as this item had a pigtail plug in most applications and the replacement pigtail/plug is not available.
PS there is a right and left so be sure to order the correct side.

i cut a groove across the back with a rotozip.that weakened it enough to grab the middle terminal and pull it out.i think gm would just replace the whole plate when replacing the switch.there was no way to release it.
