The O2 sensor is mounted in the crossover pipe directly above the downpipe connection. You will be fine either cutting out the cat or replacing the entire downpipe with a cat delete pipe from the Fierostore. The O2 sensor will not be affected.

And yeah, just to answer, these cars are OBD1.

Don't do the cat delete. Modern cats do not affect performance. Without the cat the exhaust fumes will stink badly.[This message has been edited by olejoedad (edited 08-02-2025).]

I'd concur with Old Joe.
I'd say though, if you have one of the original older cats, you should absolutely definitely replace it. The exhaust will be a bit obnoxious without the cat. I'd recommend getting a higher-flowing modern cat, like from Magnaflow. They have some really nice ones so you'll gain horsepower, and it'll still burn off the contaminants so you don't get fumes coming from your exhaust.

I had an Ocelot exhaust on my built 2.8 that was catless. It did not stink, and it sounded surprisingly healthy.

Not only does a cat help get rid of the stench of unburnt fuel... but without a cat, there's definitely more undesirable "rasp" to the sound of a Fiero's exhaust system.

thanks all.. based on what i hear , i will go with the highflow cat kit on TFS. seems reasonable , plus im not big on the rasp and popping etc etc... there is some fool around where i live , not sure , but sometimes at night this guy will be driving around and the popping litterally sounds like 50 cal gunfire... and i know hes got to be about 3/4 mile away. if only i was a cop when this guywas driving by... my pen would be worn out from the ticketbook

I have the Ocelot exhaust on my 88 GT (for 9 years). I have non-stock but similar exhaust tips on it.
I agree with others, definitely run a cat - but not the original. I never had the option to do that anyway, but the old pellet-type cats were big, heavy, and definitely restrictive. I'm using this
Walker 15026 Universal 2" Cat
Small, free-flowing, and inexpensive. Had the one currently on my car for 9 years, always passes emissions easily (we have I/M 240 here in CO). For those concerned about this, there is a CARB-approved version ($$$).[This message has been edited by OldGuyinaGT (edited 08-04-2025).]
