Manual or automatic?
If manual, check the switch on the clutch pedal, it can and does break or come out of adjustment, so it won't sense that the pedal is down and won't let it start, the automatics have a similar switch on the transmission I think to make sure it is in park or neutral before starting.

Makes contact? You verified this with a multi-meter? If the switch is good, you just have to start tracing the wire to find where the problem is. Download a copy of the factory service manual and follow the step by step procedure in it for troubleshooting the starter.

The dash gauges are powered by the ignition switch in the run position, so yes, they'll turn off when the key is turned to start, whether or not the clutch pedal is pushed down (or the switch works or not), check at the clutch pedal switch with a multimeter, if you have cruise you'll have 2 different connectors, the one with the 2 larger wires is the one you want, one should have 12v when the key is in start, and not at any other position. On the switch, the 2 contacts should have continuity when the pedal is down, and not when it is up. If those 2 things are all correct, then start tracing the wire. More than likely the clutch switch adjuster slipped and the switch isn't working when the pedal is down.
