Decklid alignment (Page 1/1)

Ok so I've been trying every possible way to get my decklid aligned on this car.

Back story on the panel and rear body they are from a different Indy and was painted a few months ago.

The drivers side trailing edge is about 4mm to far forward and know possible further rearward adjustment possible by the hinge.

The passenger side is sitting back about 2 mm with some room both directions.

Should I try some shims at the hinge on the bulk head drivers side?

I ran into this too... remember that the quarter panels can also be adjusted... you just have to (also) remove the taillights and the body to chassis screws and the whole thing can slide left or right to give a little bit of better alignment to the decklid when it's skewed. You can adjust the decklid while adjusting the quarter panels (slide it over slightly... you have about a 1/4" adjustment you can make there).

That way, when you properly adjust the decklid (to the frame / equidistant from the window), you can then adjust the rear quarter panels slightly to account for it if you've got uneven gaps on the sides. You do need to fix the depth though... because you can't really bring the quarter panels forward... but the whole thing can adjust 1/4" to the right or left, which can and does help align the edges.

On my daughter's 85 Fiero, we ended up having to put a 1/8th" shim in the top bolt location of the hinge mount against the firewall. It's the same shim that you would use if you were aligning body panels on say, an old school TransAm or Camaro.

EDIT: This whole thread gives me stress, haha... even looking at a Fiero decklid hinge makes me question wanting to stay in the car hobby... haha...

Thanks 82,

Don't stress it's giving me a fight but I got perseverance!

I'll post a couple pics once it's straightened out.

BTW thanks for the advice

This is fun. I was fighting with this a bit too and yes it helps to have the back clip a bit loose. I don't believe it's possible to get perfect because the chances of it being perfectly aligned when new is slim.

Inch it closer and closer each side at a time until you get the best balance you can.

I'm still working getting the trunk latch aligned. I have the "press the button 3 times" before the actual release.

Some recent pics, got the drivers side a little more incline of course it transferred to the passenger.

Yes I have the rear clip loose which is helping.

The last pic is what I'm not so happy with...
