Parking Brake Actuator Nut Free Spinning (Page 1/1) |

I am trying to adjust the parking brake on the right rear side. I need to remove the actuator nut in order to remove the associated parts beneath it. I did this once today with no issue, but found upon re-installing that the nut wouldnt torque up, it just spins. Its sat about 2 threads down the rod, and will not tigthen or loosen. This also means that I cannot remove it, because it will not walk itself off the rod. Save cutting it off or buying a new caliper, does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the nut? Again it just freely spins on the rod, it won't move forward or backwards.

I hate to ask the stupid question, but you do have a second wrench on threaded rod while turning the nut with another wrench, right? I just did my e brake cables late last year, but I don’t remember having this issue. I’d go out and take a look but my car is at the shop

FYI - The parking brake cables are NOT adjusted at the caliper; the only parking brake adjustment is at the Equalizer
There are strong springs inside the caliper and the piston.....you must compress the piston fully back into the caliper to tighten the actuator nut.
PS: Only '88 pistons should be retracted by rotating the piston into the caliper.

To answer both questions, yes i am holding the rod from spinning, I have done it using the parking brake lever, as it's still seated on the hex, and I have also used a wrench, both to no avail. I do know that a typical parking brake adjustment is done at the cable junction under the car, unfortunately for me, I replaced this calipers pads earlier, and when reassembling, had the actuator too far out, so now even at full actuation the parking brake does not engage, which is why I need to go in and rotate the hex with the lever off. I found a caliper at Orreilys that i am picking up in abt 1 hour. A bit of a dumb solution but I am on a time crunch and it's easier than beating my head against the wall with this nut.------------------ Kit G

Isn’t torquing the actuator nut technically part of the adjustment process? In my experience having the actuator nut at different torques drastically changes the feel of the e brake handle.[This message has been edited by Doggo (edited 05-12-2025).]

Please read the parking brake cable adjustment in your service manual in the rear caliper section.

I have. About 20 times probably. If you crank it up to the torque spec listed in the book good luck pulling the e brake because it WILL NOT want to move
