CV boot torn (Page 1/1)

The CV boot ripped on the driver's side of my '87 GT so I have ordered a new rear axle assembly, seal and spindle nut. Hopefully I will be able to replace the old axle next weekend. Curious if anyone has tried the split boot repair kits. They are glued together after putting them on the axle and clamped like the original boots. I can't see how they would hold up to the centrifugal force trying to pull the seam apart. Any comments?

I'd imagine they'd probably do OK on the Fiero. Since the Fiero is rear wheel drive, they're not bending and twisting as often as they do in a front wheel drive car where you're also managing the steering. I'd have to assume they consider these to be a temporary fix... but would probably last a few years is my guess.

Never used one though!

they dont last at all. tried them on my s10 a few times and never got any of them to work on either joint inner or outer. just buy the solid urethane ones and stretch and grease them over the cv cup

CV boot fix kits are trash. They are a nice idea but they don't work. Axles are cheap and easy to swap out and if you catch the boot early you can just buy a real boot and clamps, pull it out and regrease and replace the boots but really for the cost you aren't saving much.

A CV joint boot rips when the back wheels spin under power when they lift off the ground. Best fix is to replace with a new boot. The handicap for using the split boot as a repair is that they use adhesive to keep the boot together. The CV boost location is loaded with grease and if even a small amount gets on the new boot new seam it will completely fail.

Also, the inner splash guard can slip down and slice through the boot. Ask me how I know.

I'm gonna say that I have had good results on a split boot. and that was on front wheel drive cars.
I've never needed to replace a boot on a Fiero.
