hood latch handle, fasteners ?? (Page 1/1)

on my 85 fiero, that i got as a project, im trying to mount the interior hood latch handle. but im struggling to see how its supposed to be screwed in?
there is 3 bolt holes and 3 protrusions on the back which goes into 3 holes in the dash under the vent. but there is nothing behing those holes to screw into, and no obvious way to get acces to the backside of them?
i have tried taking the vent plate of but that did not help with access.

so how is this supposed to be mounted?

The protrusion goes into the holes so i cant just put a screw clip in there.

i have attached pictures of the handle and the holes here.

Yeah, there's definitely supposed to be a metal plate that's installed in there. That plate serves a couple of purposes, including providing a means for you to properly mount the dash to the car's body. The dash mounts in two ways... it attaches on the door pillar on both sides, and then also attaches in the back using 7mm screws when the speaker grills are removed.

I have a spare dash, one that's rather damaged, and I could take that part out, but you're in Denmark, and not sure what the shipping would be. You can have it for free if you want the bracket... but you'd need to pay for shipping, hah.

Can you verify if there is a metal bracket in there? It's possible maybe it just stripped out, or your screws are too short?

If you can't get behind there to find the plate or install a new one, the last resort and I mean LAST resort is toggle bolts even though it's half assed, it will work so you have some way of mounting the bracket even if it's temporary until you find a better solution. Just cut the screws down so they're more usable.

whoa. he could go buy some fender clips and use those instead. it can mount mostly flush instead of fully.
honestly the real thing we should do is model that part for him with dimensions so it could be made

I can verify that theres nothing up there, and looking through the stash from the former owner it doesnt seem to be in there either.
but now knowing how its supposed to look like helps alot.

thanks alot for the offer of sending it over, but the shipping might be a little much, as it looks fairly simple. and i think if i can get one of you to take some measurements of it, i would be able to make one myself.
I can of course just start testing with some sheet metal, but any measurements to start of with would be greatly appreciated

Hi! I have a spare dash, and I can take pictures and measurements. I won't be able to get to it until Sunday though... but if you can hold out until then, I'll do it.
