drive by wire throttle body (Page 1/1)

Hi there,
I have an 86 SE 2.8 manual 4 speed , is there any way to integrate a drive by wire electric Throttle body to a Fiero?

"Drive by Wire" is really Electronic Throttle Control {ETC}

Member sleek fiero converted his original 2.8 to 'drive by wire'

You need to have an ECM that will run the DBW throttle body.

My Fiero has DBW, but it came with the LS4 engine and ecm.

Yes I converted mine. I started with an Emtron ecu and flying harness. If you are going to do this you need to be commited as it is fairly expensive and theres really no turning back. You will need a doner pedal, throttle body, Lambda O2 sensor, Stand alone O2 interface, Knock sensor, Fuel pressure sensor, fuel temp sensor, Intake air temp, 2intake pressure sensors. I also added crank sensor and cam sensor so I could eliminate the old distributor and run LS coils.. this way I can map my fuel delivery and map my ignition. It now is sequential injection running 52 lb injectors. I run dual O2 sensors and dual Knock sensors. I built my own crank sensor wheel and use an LS trigger. I took apart my old distributor and built a camsensor out of it with another LS trigger. I run a Bosch 60 mm throttle body. I modified a new Nissan 370 zx throttle pedal modified with the pivoting fiero pedal. A lot of work customizing the flying harness to fit the fiero configuration but the end result was worth the effort.

Never saw much advantage in electronic throttle control in a swap but perhaps am missing something. My Chrysler 300 has it and if you mash the pedal too hard; with the slightest wheel spin, the PCM immediately drops back the RPM of the engine. The traction control feature is beneficial on snow and ice but on other situations?. My swap uses a 2006 series III 3800SC and to simplify a 2003 PCM was used so that a N* cable throttle body could be used for easier tuning. Don't profess to have all the answers so please feel free to chime in.

With a cable throttle, the driver adjusts the airflow into the engine, via the throttle. The engine computer's role is to inject fuel (and fire the spark plugs) according to the airflow into the engine.

Drive-by-wire is not just a method of opening a throttle body, it is a different paradigm of controlling the engine.

The driver requests torque. Other systems (such as your traction control example) set limits on engine torque.

The engine computer then attempts to generate the requested torque by opening the throttle plate, and adjusting fuel and spark as needed.

Emission controls also play a role here; the engine computer may prioritize emissions requirements over absolutely trying to generate the requested torque.

With everything that a car needs to be, you couldn't sell a car without the drive-by-wire paradigm into the 2000s. The advantage of drive-by-wire is that it allows you to sell a car that wouldn't otherwise be sellable.

To me drive by wire gets rid of the inefficient batch fire injection and distributor that is prone to failure. Also don't need the cold start injector. The Lambda O2 sensors are far more accurate at relaying exhaust information to adjust fuel trim and my dual Knock sensors prevent engine damage. I can run 52 lb injectors and get better fuel milage and power because they are modern digitally controlled rater than old style pintle injectors. With coil on plug ignition you have much faster coil recovery between sparks resulting in less missfires and knock sensors allow maximum advance with less chance of engine damage due to detonation. I guarantee there is no throttle lag when you mash the pedal. the system is smart enough to adjust fuel map for what ever fuel you want to use.Yes it is expensive but it was a really fun project to do and I would do it again. Also I can move this equipment to any engine i want. sleek

In addition to all the other benefits, it allows idle air control w/o an dedicated IAC valve. It allows cruise control w/o a cruise module. It also allows DoD/AFM and VVT adjustments to throttle body as these processes increase and decrease available throttle. It can also be part of traction control and help protect drivetrain components from driver abuse.

I know of at least one person using it in place of a turbo wastegate where his controller starts closing the throttle to limit turbo boost.

It provides a lot of flexibility.

My car has had DBW for going on 12 years and I probably would not do another swap without it.

Thanks Fierogaru I missed those points and there are even more but I think the most important is tune ability. I don't think there are any serious auto racers in the world that don't use DBY systems in their cars, motorcycles or Boats. Just look at the crazy horsepower that modern cars are capable of on pump fuel. It wasn't that long ago that 200 hp or less from the average V8. I really think modernizing our cars is the way to go and doing this teaches us so much about all cars sold today.

why after asking if anyone has converted their 2.8 to drive by wire and people answer him that he doesn't respond. not right
