Absolutely destroyed throwout bearing after clutch replacement (Page 1/1)

Well, I've had a leak in the Getrag in one of my '88's. Finally got around to dropping the cradle, removing the transmission, separating the case halves and resealing the transmission. While I had the cradle out, I did some maintenance, new clutch kit, water pump, spark plugs, cap, new AC compressor, and some other odds and ends.

Got it all back together and didn't even make it a mile down the road when the clutch completely locked up. Smells like burnt clutch. Well, obviously I screwed something up Coasted and got it back home and back into the shop, dropped the cradle again (yay, that is aways fun) and pulled out the trans.

Apparently the throwout bearing was completely destroyed.

All I can figure is I installed the throwout bearing in backwards (is that even possible?). Anyone have any thoughts and or confirmation that's what I did? I've ordered a new clutch kit so I'll replace everything. (again).

I've been searching and most of the older pictures are long gone, so which way does the TB face? I don't recall it being marked.

Anything else I need to fix while I'm in there? The clutch fork looks fine. Car has about 70K on it.

Was this throw-out bearing re-used? It looks really burnt (but all that could be simply because it failed).

I'm no expert here (only done this twice)... but I know that the throw-out bearing can only go one direction because the little pads are supposed to rest against the fork-arm... so if you were to put it in any other way, it wouldn't operate properly.

Some thoughts:

- Maybe the throwout bearing had never been greased? Normally they come pre-greased.
- Did you use any grease other than what was supplied with the kit?
- What was the quality of the clutch kit you used, was it made in China?

That sucks man...

looks like it was installed backwards as there looks lie no wear or burning on face of bearing. All burning on bearing retainer side
