Hi, I have an 86 SE 2.8 manual 4 speed, it's a ferrari 308 replica, my driver side headlight works good, the passinger side is weak, I checked the current to both, it's the same, I checked doors load, it's a two doors at each side. the original Fiero and the aaded one of the replica, both are nearly the same, all gears inside the motor are in perfect condition and the rubber tubes as well, it's perfectly assembled and srop OK at both ends, please see video attached, is th here any other ideas side buying a new one which is quite expensive

you need a replacement motor unfortunately. buy one off fiero store the problem is what i had faced just a little less extreme. your brushes and contacts are getting worn down and weak and it needs to be rebuilt i put new brushes in mine and it worked once before shorting out the commutator and never moved again. luckily pick and pull got a few fieros and they all had rebuild motors

If each motor is having to lift 2 doors, each with the same tension as the original single door, then that will be a recipe for worn, overheated motors and wiring. The Fiero doors alone already have a lot of load, compared to say the firebird.

In short, for the upgrade you will need the headlight motor harness, two newer headlight 87-88 motors and the headlight control module. Its an expensive proposition so I rebuilt mine on my 85GT. A good job is possible but not always easy. On the motors I did, the gears were OK so new gear inserts, and motor brushes had to be replaced. Rebuilding Gen 1 motors is probably not the best way to go but the most economical way. If the job is not done right, Gen 1 motors can stall latch up and there is a small possibility that they could catch fire. This can be remedied by a switch in the 12V supply wire. There is a Corvette kit that replaces the old vacuum headlight motors with modified Gen 2 motors but AFAIK no one has yet adapted it to a Fiero. That system uses limit switches a unique control module.

Headlight motor fires are rare. Fire is just a rare possibility and I got that covered. A cheap solution is a switch on the white power feed wire that can be turned off when the headlights are not used, On all my Fieros I use a battery cutoff switch with a 10 amp fuse across the switch terminals. When in the off position this small feed keeps the ECM/PCM , clock and radio from resetting, provides theft and protection from any shorts in the system. When I go to start the car I just switch it to on and all systems are set to go.
