Recently I tore apart my 1988 Pontiac Fiero V6 engine due to rod knock, turns out it was pretty bad, and there is significant scoring on the crank journal for piston #4. My next thought was to use the crank from my 1987 engine, but I quickly found that they are not the same, as only of them is internally balanced. I have not been able to find a replacement crankshaft for the 1988, I was wondering if anyone had one, or if it is best to replace the rod bearings for a while, until I have enough to use a 3.1L crank and pistons as a replacement, as I did some reading and they are compatible.

Would you be able to use the 87 crank, unbalanced, with the 87 flywheel/pressure plate (the external balance)?

The 3.1 stroker kit is available from ARI Racing for $650: https://engine-parts.com/pr...er-engine-basic-kit/
It comes with the pistons, rods, crank, and bearings.
Hah, that's like 20 minutes from where I live.

Cheaper and easier to take the crankshaft to a machine shop, they will be able to provide what ever sized bearing it will require after their work.

If I already had the engine out, and disassembled, I'd just do the 3.1 conversion.

Thats what I am trying to do at the moment, however I have not been able to come across the 87 flywheel.

Ill try and do that as my first step, hoping the crank isn't too far gone for them to fix it.

Thats honestly not too bad of a price, I will have to look into that if the machine shop says the crank is toast.

When using the 3.1L crankshaft, you may be able to use the later neutral balance flywheel and just have the whole assembly re-balanced. Might be a good idea to check costs and see what else the budget will buy. Many engine swap mechanics sometimes remove a good engine to upgrade, Three of my personal swap engines replaced 50K and 60K mile 2.8L engines. They were removed and they were sold for a song.
