Clutch fluid keeps getting dirty (Page 1/2)
MilesPrower FEB 10, 08:04 AM
Been experiencing my clutch not completely disengaging. I bled the lines after I got the car and bled it again about two weeks later. Now the clutch isn’t disengaging from time to time again causing me to pump it once or twice to get it into1st. It’s fine shifting in traffic, it’s just getting in and out of first sometimes. Any advise?

Are you having to add fluid regularly? I'm confused about the clutch fluid getting dirty comment. Are you saying that the fluid in the reservoir looks dirty after a few days? My thought is that maybe the seals are going bad and breaking up... and that's what you're seeing in the fluid.

Fluid level is perfectly fine. I’m not adding any. It keeps going brown and I think air is getting into the system somehow. There doesn’t seem to be any leaks anywhere.

How old are your Clutch Master & Slave Cylinders?

Clutch fluid keeps getting dirty / clutch not completely disengaging / fluid level is perfectly fine

To me, it is time to replace the clutch master & slave cylinders...

Pull the boot off the slave rod and feel the back of the clutch master where it comes thru the firewall. If theres wet rusty fluid, change em both. Dirty fluid is prolly the seals in the master breaking down.

Not sure how old they are, but they’re both likely original to the car going on 38 years old.

If the fluid was getting greyish, I'd say it was relatively "normal" for aluminum components... but brown sounds like it's from moisture corroding cast iron components.

The necessity of repeated bleeding does sound air like air is getting into the system... and keep in mind, that can happen without any evidence of fluid leaking out. This is a pretty common occurrence with single-seal clutch slave cylinders.

Replace both the Clutch Master & Slave Cylinders and flush the line...

Just to put it on record, I bled the clutch today and it has all new fluid in the line. I will update in about a week.
