As far as I know, yes you are able to, just make sure to save the transmission brackets (pieces between the transmission and rubber mounts) to compare. I know the 88 engine mount is in a different place, but I think the transmission mounts are the same.

Yes, it will bolt up. You will need the transmission brackets as 1985 Fiero GT said. You will also need to swap out throwout bearings. Brackets and throwout bearing are needed only if you have a 4-speed in your 86. The 86 V6 5-speed setup is the same as the 88. The only difference in the 88 front motor mount is that it's liquid filled and has no bearing on transmission mounting.

If you have a 4-speed 86, you will need to get the shifter, cables and cable mount along with the slave mount for the 88 Getrag. If you're bolting the Getrag to a 4-cylinder 86, it would be a good idea to just buy a complete clutch kit for an 87 or 88 V6 so that you have a bigger clutch disk. The reason I say 87 or 88 is that it will pretty much assure you get the bigger disk and plate due to the 86 having all 3 manual transmissions and you could get a 4-speed Muncie or 5-speed Isuzu setup that would have the wrong throwout bearing.

Awesome thank you for the info i should have specified more its a v6 with the 4 speed manual and wanted to go to the 5speed if it was a nightmare.

Yes, it will work, just need to make sure you used the Getrag transmission brackets (the ones that bolt to the transmission as they are different).

With that in mind, here's everything you'll need:

- Transmission
- Transmission brackets
- 5-Speed Shifter assembly in the center console

Everything else can be the same.

You will absolutely need a Getrag release bearing. The 4 speed clutch may work, but I've heard varying stories.
Since you're already going to be in there, best to just replace the entire clutch with a Getrag 5 speed kit.

You will also need 5 speed shift and select cables, for the Getrag. (Don't use the Isuzu cables.)

This my first time actually using this forum you guys are awesome thank. Last question, i can do the work no problem after finding out everything you guys informed me of but is it worth all the work and extra money to go from the 4 to the 5 speed?

To me, yes...

I’ve owned three Fiero models over the years: ’84 ‘Iron Duke’ 2M4 SE, then an early ‘86 GT V6 w/ 4-Speed and lastly purchased a Brand-New ‘88 GT with the 5-speed gear box

The 4-speed manual has a big jump from 3rd to 4th

In the Duke, it was terrible, but better with the torque of the V6

IMHO - I really enjoy my 5-speed...
