since you are supposed to use pontiac 6000 axles to swap it into a fiero 2.5 i was wondering if i can just cut the axles near the transmission instead of removing the whole axles?the donor is a 1989 reatta.the reason i want to do this is its easier and leaving the axles in the trans keeps out dirt.

If the junkyard doesn't object that might be a good approach but cutting through a hardened steel axle may not be all that easy. Then you would probably have to swing whats left of those axles out of the way to drop the transmission. The exhaust crossover may also need to be removed. Your idea is to put an automatic transmission designed for application on a 3800 engine on the Fiero Duke engine. I would check gear ratios before moving forward.------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. Why would it not be a good idea?
Even the early 3800's were decent engines.

i was told it was a bad idea because the engine was an inch taller, only 160 hp,uses a different wiring harness, uses different mounts than a series two.the idea was id want to 'upgrade'to a series two later and id need different stuff to do that.

Lots of 3800 swaps around. Check the archives. I’m sure I’ve seen lists of what’s needed for these.

The series 1 3800 engine would probably provide reliability but it is a lot of work for 160HP. You could equal that with the 3.4L P/R engine that would bolt in easier with the 2.8L harness cradle and ECM. Minor harness changes would be required for Fieros 85-88. The 84 Duke has very different wiring and would be more difficult.,
