starting to install a new rear ball joint. the mevotech brand i purchased did not come with this metal "dust shield" in my hand so i assembled without it.

my old ball joint had it- how necessary is this metal shield- should i install it? the rubber boot does seem a bit exposed. hmmm... thoughts?

Because mine is readily accessible.

As far as whether it's necessary I feel it was more about the boot keeping water and dust at bay.
