Fuel pump? (Page 1/2)
TobinM JAN 09, 08:08 PM
I’m replacing my fuel pump on my 86’ se, and I’m not sure if it’s the problem anymore. I’ve got it out of the tank but still plugged in and when I go to turn on the car the pump primes, but when it was in the tank about a month ago it stopped priming (it would sometimes prime and sometimes not). Is my pump bad and need replacement? I do have a new one I’m replacing it with anyway but now I’m curious if it could be something else. I noticed this started happening when the weather started getting cold. I was also wondering what this floaty thingy is?

A bad fuel pump relay or any corroded wiring connections could affect the fuel pump.

The "floaty thingy" is part of what measures the level of gas in the tank.

That is a pulsar thats supposed to quiet the hum from the pump. Most people eliminate it with some proper fuel hose and a couple of clamps

Ive seen a bunch of reports of the replacement hose splitting (even using the correct hose like the one that comes with the pump). Personally I'd just keep the dampener in there. I've never heard of a dampener causing an internal leak.

I was losing prime after changing out my fuel pump and I ended up dropping the tank and removing the pulsar. This cured the pressure drop. I suspect the diaphram in the Pulsar had disintegrated. sleek

Its an old fuel pump. Now that the tank is down I would replace it regardless. In place of the pulsator I would use a small piece of J30R10 submersible fuel injection line as regular injection hose will deteriorate or just use a new pulsator.

I actually replaced the pump last year, it was quite a cheap pump but I don’t think it should have gone out. But I’m replacing it regardless with a new more expensive and reliable one. I’m gonna delete that pulsator thingy cause I’ve heard it can cause vacuum loss and stuff

I hope you learned the lesson TobinM

I have seen many PFF members thinking about their wallets first, and forget the 'real cost' to replace 'IT' again...

In my world, I rather pony up the best parts and be done.

You only need the pulsator thing for a certain style of pump. Most of the newer pumps no longer require it, but don't quote me on that. There's a huge write-up on why it's needed versus why it's not needed anymore for some of the newer pumps. Just make sure that with the pump you're getting, it doesn't require one. For the original style of pump, if you took the pulsator off, you'd be hating life as it would be a constant banging in the cabin since it's directly underneath you in the center console!

Rodney Dickman has a fuel pump, it is priced pretty well I think and it works as expected, and very quiet (compared to my old one I could hear above the engine at any rpm, which coincidentally told me my alternator was bad, as the tone would change randomly, with the voltage)
