Dash wiring (Page 1/1)

Looking. For some help. I removed an aftermarket radio from my 86 SE. the waiting was all cut up, but I got a new harness and wired it all up. Radio works but none of my dash interior lights work. I also have a boost gauge tapped into 12 v key on power and it works as well. I have checked all the connection and all the cluster connections and bulbs. My turn signals stay on solid when I try and signal, my hazards work fine and all my exterior lights flash as they should when the hazards are on. My headlights go up and down no issue No here is where it gets funky, if I flip the headlight switch or even just the running lights my dimmer works and dims the radio, aux gauges and just the right side of the cluster (tach side only) and my boost gauge goes dead! And both left and right indicators just stay lit. I have been trying to trace wires, tested with a spare resistor (one under the dash) but nothing still the same thing. Does anyone have any idea where my wiring isn’t right?

What year?

What color wire did you tap into for the boost gage power?

It’s an 86 SE. the boost gauge is tapped on the yellow wire. Same as my other GT and no problems there.

You can try to disconnect the brown dimmer wire and or the gray panel lighting wire from the stereo and see if it makes a difference.

I forgot to mention that unplugging the radio doesn’t change anything.

I figured it all out. Bad ground for the boost gauge, blown temp gauge, 2 bad indicator relays. Temp gauge works now after swapping in a good one, all lights come on and the dingy thingy started to work. Indicators are still hit and miss so I think the last thing to fix is to replace both indicator relays.
