Starter issue (Page 1/1)

Lately my 86 F40 conversion (2.8 V6) does not initially crank when turning the ign key to the start position. After a couple of start attempts, it the will start, but feels like the starter is laboring. I have been considering putting a push start button in the car, and looking at the many options at Autozone (few other places in Mazatlan,Mexico that offer anything). A couple of questions: 1) any amp minimum for the switch? 2) how many wire hookup terminals should the switch have? 3) gauge of the wiring for this? I am assuming this hookup would wire from my fuse box to the starter solenoid? Many thanks in advance! Steve

First, Check your battery. If you don't have 12.5v with nothing on and the engine not running, the battery is on it's way out. Second, check the starter cables from the battery to the starter and from the starter to ground. Clean and tighten all connections. Third, check your starter relay. it could be on the way out. If this doesn't get solve the issue, look for a new starter.

As for your push button start, any PB should be operating through a relay. Never put the starter current directly through the switch. It's a good way to burn your car down. As for amperage, 10 amps is more than enough to operate the relay but the relay itself, needs to be rated to take the starter motor voltage.

Thankyou for that! I will check that out before considering a push start button. I can’t find any info on starter relays for a Fiero. Would any generic relay work, and is it complicated to put into the circuit?

Check whether the posts on the starter are tight. I had the same issue where it would crank, but it was very labored and sometimes wouldnt crank at all, even on a full charge. I sometimes had to wiggle the positive cable in order for it to crank right. I lifted the car and checked the post and the bolt was tight on, but the plastic housing around the post had broken, causing the post itself to be loose and rattle around and it would interrupt the connection. I bought a new starter and it fixed the issue, it also happened to fix every other issue I had with the engine as well (it didn't run well for the longest time and I couldn't figure out why)

Well today it fired right up, but I will get underneath and check out everything. I keep the car covered here, but the salt air here gets at everything. I even Jack the car up and paint everything underneath once a year. The car has no rust. I hate electrical gremlins!
