Hardware required to hold compressor for Iron Duke Engine (Page 1/1)
MERATIME DEC 08, 01:34 PM
Hello all,

I wanted to ask if anyone could tell me what hardware I need to add the compressor to my 1987 2.5 liter Iron Duke engine?

(Note: The compressor was missing when purchased but wiring & connections found)

Also if you have photos of the actual set up or diagram, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ok, so... this again is going to be complicated... it depends on whether or not you're going to go with the ORIGINAL 1987-1988 accessories (with serpentine system), or if you're going to stick with the V-belt system.

The 1984-1986 Fieros utilized a SEPARATE V-belt for the A/C compressor, in addition to the V-belt that powered the water-pump and alternator (off the crank). So if you decide to stick with the V-belt, you'll need to get an 84-86 set of A/C brackets (Which I have, and will give you for free). In that configuration, the A/C compressor is adjustable, meaning that you move the compressor in order to tighten the V-belt. There are THREE brackets that weigh in over 5 pounds, compared to the 87+ which is only 2.5 pounds.

84-86

87-88

On the 1987-1988 Fieros (which you've asked about), the A/C compressor is fixed. There's a top bracket, which also attaches to the water pump, a rear bracket (which has three 10mm screws) and two that affix it to the block), and then a SINGLE bar that attaches the side and goes all the way up to the water pump.

Here are some pictures of my daughter's 1985 motor, that we converted to serpentine system (we use the alternator as a tensioner). This is an 85, but it has all the brackets you will need... you'll have a belt tensioner, so your upper alternator bracket will look different. Everything else will be the same.

Note, I have a harmonic balancer installed. These never came with Fieros, but if you can find one, it'll solve two problems for you. Better engine balance, and also give you back the serpentine pulley. Part number is on the box. They are basically impossible to find.

Hello 82TA, I can’t thank you enough for your assistance and time helping me to get this Iron Duke running. I am planning to try to use the stock setup adding the compressor & adding a new tensioner. I would prefer to use the 87-88 setup because a majority of parts for it are there. As far as the previous belt setup (which was how I brought this car), I will not continue that. Again , you have been very helpful. I will be in contact with you with the progress. Please continue to share and ad your ideas and advice with this rebuild. Talk again soon.

No problem. I have other pictures too if you need them. The engine is already in the car, but I have plenty more that I took as we were building out the motor.

By the way, if you need a belt tensioner (and don't already have one), Rodney Dickman sells them for $229: https://rodneydickman.com/p....php?products_id=371

For what it's worth, I bought one from him, thinking it might work. It won't fit my engine because I have an 85 block (it only fits 87-88 motors). I don't need it, but I spent $229 on it. If you want it, I'll sell it for $175. It's still wrapped as Rodney shipped it to me. I just want to take some pictures of it for my daughter's videos. But I'll ship it for $175.

Thanks!

I like the gray with the black color combination you painted the block on your iron duke. If i had seen this before I rebuilt my engine I think I would have done the same. I left it all Black because that is what is was from the factory.

Yeah, she was going to do all black, but picked the dark grey simply because it made it easier to see if there were any leaks on the motor, or any other issues.

I re-arranged your images so I could look at them easier... hahah... that's a nice 1984 engine, looks super nice.
