Speedometer cluster electrical draw (Page 1/1)

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping for some help. I have an '85 GT that does not hold a charge. It's been narrowed down to the instrument cluster and the speedometer motor. There's not much in the Mechanics manual that I purchased with the car back in "85. Anyone have issues with this? Solutions? I've had it sent to a third party electronic repair and they couldn't do anything. They suggested a guy in california who charges $1200.00!

That would be very unusual.

90% of the time, it's the headlight motors. Try disconnecting the single wire that goes to each headlight motor and see if that makes a difference in the battery drain.

The speedometer has an intermittent problem of cutting out when driving and then working again. I'm guessing that the mechanic that told me this is correct. But I wouldn't be surprised if there is a headlight issue as well. I'll check it out. Thanks

I'm literally sending out my gauges to a guy named Jack Gunsett to be calibrated and repaired, like... tomorrow... so this is timely. He's literally charging me 1/12th of what you were just quoted.

You can reach out to him (PM him) on here: J Gunsett

(click the link and then hit PM below)

EDIT: To emphasize what Patrick is saying, I would concur... I really doubt the drain is coming from the gauge cluster. I'm not an expert here, but I've just never seen that... not saying it can't happen though.

Perhaps it's the headlight down function (which is routed through the headlight switch, in the instrument cluster)?
