So I got the pump for the 1988 GT. It's a Cardone pump, have a metal impeller and the extra pipe which is not needed.
The pipe seems to be glued with silicone, feels like rubber, it has a pinch where a 17mm key fits so I guess it's only to screw it out.

The extra hose barb is the heater core return for the earlier years and is not used on the 88s. On the 88s the heater core return hose joins the lower coolant hose from the radiator right before the rear cradle on the on passenger side.
It looks to be a press fit. If it was my car, I would pull it out and find a freeze plug to fit the hole or tap it for a cap to be threaded in.[This message has been edited by fieroguru (edited 12-02-2024).]

87s also do not use that tube, and in the past when I've had to change out the waterpump, it's been an absolute bear to remove that. I had to put the waterpump in a vice, and then use an enormous pair of channel-lock pliers to break it free. These are always screw-ins, but I suspect that's just sealant that they install to prevent leaks.

Is that the correct impeller for a Fiero pump?

It's not the default kind that the Fieros came with, which was a cast unit. This one seems to be a stamped impeller, and I'd question it probably works better. But it should definitely fit. Different manufacturers make them differently...

"closed" impeller...that's what I trying to think of yesterday lol. I thought the closed impeller type was specific to the Fiero, necessary to circulate the coolant al the way around a Fiero.

ALL of GM Water Pumps for the Fiero Had 'Closed' Metal Impellers
Aftermarket designs can often use Open Impellers as a way to lower the cost; stamped fins are faster/cheaper to make than enclosed fins.

When ready to install don't forget to use sealant on the bolts that hold the water pump to the water jacket. Neglecting to do so will cause a leak like not securing the timing chain cover while you assemble and disassemble. While I prefer the closed impeller design I have used the open impeller configuration with success.
