Hey all I'm just wondering how hard it would be to remove the EGR completely and what I would gain/loose. It's a 1988 2.5. ------------------

You won't really gain any power since I don't think it's being used at wide open throttle... but you won't have to clean your intake as often. The only thing to consider though is that the ECM expects it to be there, so it's been programmed to account for it.
You'll want a block-off plate. This one looks like it will fit (meant for something else), but double check... don't take my word for it:

What about routing it to fresh air? Instead of blocking it off.

No, that's not something you want. The EGR displaces fresh air already in the intake with exhaust from the two middle exhaust ports, it can't be modified to add MORE fresh air.. otherwise you'd just have a massive vacuum leak.

You Won't gain nothing at all, what you will do is increase cylinder temperatures which will effect ARF ratio's and will effect fuel tables, so most likely in a stock engine, an overall loss.

The purpose of the EGR is to reduce NOX gasses, a good byproduct of that is it lowers the combustion chamber temperature.
