Fiero 4 speed rattling noise (Page 1/1)

So, just started driving my Fiero (4 speed Muncie, v6) for the spring, and had a new noise that really bugged me (sounded exactly like a cracked exhaust manifold, but without the louder exhaust, and more clicky) couldn't isolate the noise as the only time it would appear was when driving, eventually for an unrelated thing, I had the IAC closed and the engine idling at 600 rpm, and the noise showed up again, seems it shows up at high and super low rpms, and any load on the engine, but not at idle rpm. I traced it to the transmission, closer to the engine then not, maybe clutch area, noise goes away when clutch is depressed, or rpm is raised to normal idle speed.

Last year I had a really bad manifold leak, so it could have covered this noise up, or the noise could be new.

Transmission shifts perfectly (synchros are maybe a little stiff, if anyone has anything to say about that), holds power well, no grinding, unusual engagement, or "slipping"of anything. Happens in all gears and neutral, as long as clutch is engaged.

What could this be, could low trans fluid cause that, it shifts perfectly, already has synchromesh (and a little Lucas transmission stuff, weeped a little oil before that), or would this be something else failing, internally, that is more significant, or is this no cause for concern?

Thanks!

Just an idea but I had a similar noise and what it eventually was is the clutch disk springs starting to get loose or broken. I would borrow a stethiscope or use a piece of fuel line to listen and pinpoint the sound a little better. sleek

Interesting, yeah, I was using a breaker bar haha, not very precise, but works surprisingly well for listening. Any other solutions your Fiero exhibited, different clutch pressure, slipping clutch, all rpms, all load conditions, all the time or similar to an exhaust leak just when under load?
