Sleeve popped out, do I need a new control arm? (Page 1/1) |

Removing the poly bushings from my front lower control arms (in prep for welding in Rodney Dickman's lowering ball joint, I was worried they might get damaged from the heat) and the metal sleeve popped out with the bushing. I have done this a few times and this has never happened..
Is this an issue or can I just press it back in?
If it is an issue..
Do o I need to pick up a new control arm? Or can I just put it in and weld it back in place?

That problem Isn't as rare as many think and Doubtful new CA will fit this
Why?
Pop out easy by hand then the sleeve/shell, CA hole, or both have big problems.
Some examples: Outer Sleeve can rust out and be weak or worse even w/ OE bushings. Polly bushings often have voids between outer sleeve and polly allowing rust on inside of sleeve. The holes can rust and be weaker, rust can even change hole diam a bit to a lot, and/or wallow out from hard bushing that doesn't absorb road hits. IOW While that CA seems good in a pic, maybe damage hitting things, or "simple" crush the sleeve w/ polly for same reason.
Burning out or otherwise removing the OE rubber and installing Polly often doesn't help... Rubber had Hundreds to Thousands of PSI for being pressed between inner and outer metal to partly counter balance pressures from the CA or other holes their pressed into. Likely Outer Sleeve is a bit weak to start with to very slightly compress being press in the hole. It maybe using the installation press etc to work harden the part a bit too.
You can't just press it back in. Welding the sleeve likely just break soon and have more headaches.
In the car that sleeve will move likely a lot and allow CA to move axially, same direction as the bolt length, making way more load for other bushing. Could rotate in the CA hole too. Any sleeve moving in steel hole can wear out both. Do you mean you doubt a new arm will fix this? Because if fitment is an issue I will just buy new bushings.

Yes. auto spell etc often miss fit/fix and more.
old or new polly often won't solve the problem even when install then clean out a new OE bushing.
Other polly bushings can be iffy/bad but sleeves not so lose can pop out by hand.

I am going try a few welds on this and buy new arms as well. see which one handles better.
