Brake switch wont stay in place? (Page 1/1)
Threedog JUN 20, 10:24 PM
I have an 87 GT and the brake switch won't say in place. I feel like I may need a new retainer/clip? I am having a hell of a time finding one though..

Every time I put it in the brake pedal just pushes the switch out..

The clip could rust out etc but the plastic likely has thrash "threads."
Not sure what can do to fix but find a new switch.

Cut a couple of small sections of rubber hose about 1/2" in length, and cut them down the side so you can wrap the plastic shaft on both sides of the bracket and wire tie them in place. The hose probably need to be 5/8 or 3/4" in diameter, so some old heater hose would work.

I would just put a bead of e6000 adhesive on the switch at the retaining bracket and let it dry overnight. That glue is super strong but the terrific thing about it is that when dry, if necessary it can be pulled away and off with just a small bit of effort

Thanks for the suggestions all, knowing what the clip looked like allowed me to purchase this: https://shop.advanceautopar...nel=local&store=8184

The white inserts are plastic but they hold the brake switches WAY better than the metal clip ever did.

Only problem was that it was slightly too big for the brake switch hole, but it fit right in the hole for the cruise control! And since I converted to electronic cruise control, I don't need the cruise switch anymore (I think...its been a few years since I did that swap..)

You still need the cruise switch to disengage the C/C when stepping on the brake......

I agree the threads are probably stripped but (and this is somewhat common sense but I'll mention it) there is a bit of a special touch to installing these brake switches. You want to push it in just far enough that the returning brake pedal pushes in the tip of the switch, but not so far that the brake pedal pushes the entire switch back out. Might take a little trial and error.
